All areas of knowledge have changed to this day and this is no different with education. The first attitude you must have is to move forward, embrace change and accept that it is a reality, and a reality that will not be necessary. So, study emerging technologies, use them little by little, as you insert them into your daily life, until they stop being new to you and become a constant part of your life.

I would say, step back and don't force it. Ask yourself why you want to use it in the first place. Is it really that important and will it make learning better? If you are still struggling with ways to implement, do not be afraid to ask for help. Are there other teachers who are using it in your building? It seemed like there was always one teacher who was animate about using technology at our school. Hit them up and maybe ask them to watch one of their classes. Never feel like you have to use technology, let it come naturally. For example, I only used the Kahoot platform because I always wanted to get quick feedback from the class. It fulfilled a need that I missing. I didn't use it because others were.

For this reason teachers have suffered for long time from inadequate experience in educational technology. Administrators in ministries of education must be understood that schools need educational technology specialists rather than computer specialists

One of the best ways to get comfortable with new tech is to just click everything to see what happens. However one of the biggest barriers to using new technology is fear. The implicit (often unconscious) feeling that any button you click will either be a 'self-destruct', or will immediately be sending your credit card details to someone unscrupulous. If the technology is managed by your institution, then remember that your institutional IT departments are responsible for making it safe. So click everything! And if anything goes wrong - it's your IT department's fault...

The key approach to adapting new technologies to our lessons is taking the time! Which is frustrating, because the developments in technology happen quickly! Yet, technological developments happen quickly does not mean, we can integrate all of them into our lessons. We need to be critical, and diagnose which tools are better to use in the classroom, which outside of the classroom, which is better to use individually and which is better to use as a group etc. Then we need to use the ones we think it would work, and then assess if it has actually worked, and try another one, or continue to grow on the initial tools. It is a process to integrate the new technologies in classrooms, and we need to take the time!

Always think you need to crawl before you run, it can get overwhelming to do everything at once. Consider the SAMR method and just substitute some tech first to do what you already accomplish and grow from there.

Gradual integration is key, teachers need to be given the proper support to learn the new technology and the time to figure out how to leverage the technology for successful outcomes. Most importantly, try new stuff and do not be afraid to fail, we learn more from our mistakes than our success.

I remember supporting tech integration as a teacher assistant fresh out of college in the 1990’s with one of the first computer labs in the district in a summer program. The students had access to reading and math games to boost their skills. The following year, in a different district, our principal announced a new computer lab we were expected to use right away. I took my class, remembering the lab I used over the summer, but it wasn’t operational yet! It was a disaster because there was nothing for students to access. I didn’t give up. Fast forward a decade or so, I was on a district tech team, seeing students teaching each other how to use tech to transform learning, and supporting colleagues. Don’t let setbacks define your future!
