What do you do if you're a statistician struggling with imposter syndrome and need guidance from mentors?

In my years of leading data science teams and teaching, I've seen firsthand how common imposter syndrome is, especially among those new to statistics or AI. My perspective? It’s crucial to normalize these feelings within the academic and professional communities. In my interactions, I emphasize the collective journey of growth, underscoring that every expert was once a beginner. By sharing my own moments of doubt and how I overcame them, I aim to foster an environment where seeking support is not only encouraged but celebrated. A mentor, in this context, acts not just as a guide but as a mirror reflecting your own progress and potential, something we often overlook in ourselves.

Because data science is a continually evolving field, Imposter Syndrome is a common reaction to the sometimes overwhelming amount of information you are exposed to as a statistician or data scientist. It is natural to feel daunted and inadequate, but it is also imperative to address these perceptions, lest they stunt your professional development. I've found that an effective way to battle Imposter Syndrome is to embrace a Growth Mindset. That is, acknowledge that you do not, and can not know everything, but begin building upon the knowledge you do possess. Prioritize learning based upon the demands of your position, and seek out a mentor who is a specialist in that subject matter. Remain humble and curious as you grow.

This is very common especially if you've been in a position that didn't regularly require the same level of rigor that you may have been used to in college. One of the best things I have found is to return to the source of my learning. I have often reached back out to former professors, classmate, managers, or co-workers to get advise on a hard problem. they always appreciate the compliment and the chance to catch up.

It’s okay to feel that, I think self doubt and enquiry is the way to learning. So the first step is to acknowledge. Once done, look at your environment, how supportive it is of your actions , sometimes you can’t be open to one community but to others. So the next step is to bring your doubts where you know it’s safe to open up. And lastly to embrace the good answer and give genuine credit- which is fading away. It is always nice to genuinely credit people who have helped you- it creates a healthy learning environment.

I believe the first thing is: acceptance. It is quite normal to be at such at a stage in one's career pyramid. Seeking assistance from mentors is not a weakness rather a decision to enhance the self efficacy. Mentor's perspective may help unlock the blind spotted potential. This definitely will boost the confidence and belief in oneself to perform the best. Also, if not open communication with a mentor, i believe a good discussion with a colleague in general may help removing insecurities and self doubt which may pave path to KSBA's of Learning and performance.

Reduce the scope of your goals to something you can manage. Grandiose goals do more harm than good, even too long roadmaps can be overwhelming. Identify the most useful thing you need to learn that you are able to learn from where you currently are and learn that. Then reevaluate and move forward. You can do it!

I do not consider myself an expert in statistics. Although there are some fundamental principles that apply across most of the field of statistics it is so expansive that it can a single course or even degree cannot cover it. Like many disciplines it is best learned by doing and appying the principles and using different techniques. If you accept the need for continuous study and learning impostor syndrome will never be a barrier to learning and honing your skills.

Learning is one of those things you don't get tired of. Knowledge advances fast and we have to try to go at the same speed, at least in our field. Knowing that you don't know everything can give you that spark that ignites your love for learning. Now a days there are incredible sources for learning. If you don't like to read there are videos, if you like to read there are tons of books. Look for ways that adapts to your learning type. Be hungry for learing!.

Normalizing feelings of self doubt sounds wrong but i understand that it means you shouldnt feel like you are alone. I think sharing with peers usually removes the fear. I have been in rooms where i asked a question first only to realize most people had the same question. There shpuld never be a stupid question....all questions are valid. Just ask. You may help yourself and other people also. Mentoring may help get comfortable to do that.

It is important to reflect on hard work you may have done, all the extra efforts you may have put in to accomplish the task. It is important to give your self credit for any success and feel confident about it. Imposter syndrome is all about doubting your own abilities so it is important to congratulate yourself on successes and set higher goals than before to say to yourself you can do it.

Reflecting often helps develop a growth mindset. It can be tempting to think that you have failed because you have not yet fixed the problem but success is not just achieved by reaching a goal it is also attained by making progress towards your goal. Take time to notice and appreciate your progress. Ask your mentor what progress they have seen and you may be surprised by what they say.

Self reflection is always key. Better yet if there is external feedback where there could be blind spots. Mentorship is one way to achieve that.

Sometimes just accepting where you are in your journey is all that's needed to kick-start breaking the spell of imposter syndrome. Noone has all the answers and it's important to remind yourself of that! "All models are wrong" (George Box) so don't put the pressure of perfection on yourself!

Accept that you're learning and growing, even experts still learn new things. In my experience, and not just in statistics, I've found that what I think is low-quality work is very appreciated by my clients, so I've started to appreciate the work and effort I put into it too.

This is my story how NOT to react - I learned something and hopefully others can, too. I'm presenting a small project, where I'm dualling as SME and a statistician. Of course, I've consulted 2 SMEs, which confirmed matter related concepts. A known impostor interrupts: 'You misunderstood this concept!' 'Really?' - I took out the "very official paper", which is confirming my statement to the letter, read it aloud and continue 'This can't be used.', impostor interrupts 'Oh, I'll get SME opinion on that' He burst in the stream of incoherent babble. 'Why are you even here? You're not in the project commission, not a SME, you're disputing known premises. Please write a report and we'll discuss it'. Oooops. That was it. Project was never greenlit.

Individuals in any jobs are at varying skill levels. This is the nature of life and should be embraced. If you did not learn and develop that would be a miserable existence. Never make claims you cannot deliver on, speak honestly, and dont be afraid to ask others for their opinions. When people claim to never be wrong or to have all the answers they are the imposters. The only real way to deal with those fears is to speak the truth and accept the consequences. They will always be better in the long run than trying to get away with dishonesty. If someone tells you otherwise, run.

If you put a lot of pressure on yourself to be perfect (incidentally, that's called a good sense of responsibility), loosen up in non-professional ways first. For example, tell friends that you will be at your meeting at a certain time with a 20% margin of error. (I used to make my friends smile by telling them that I would be there with an 80% margin of error ??)
