Job postings tend to be very transparent in listing skills (technical and soft skills) needed for the job. Ask your client to find 3 companies or job openings that they would love to work in. These must align with the client's values, availability, and need for balance, career goals, etc.. Have them do homework on the companies to decide which ones to pursue. Have the client write 2 lists: one with their skills, strengths, experience that meet those jobs; a second list of items what would need to do the job but don't currently have. Create a plan for what they need to learn in order to be a close to exact fit for those positions. Some skills can be learned on the job others you need to already. Reach out to the hiring manager to ask.

I am a huge remote work promoter, but I also know it's not for everyone. Remote jobs represent about 30% of the opportunities out there. And many of them are already filled, so you are less likely to see as many job listings. Hybrid is likely to be the new normal, once people figure out what hybrid means. The "sometimes" aspect of hybrid means challenges for people with fixed responsibilities like child care. Rather than starting with a job search, figure out how you want your life to be. This is where a coach can really help you. You want to have a career that fits your life rather than building your life around a job.

Just like a sprinter’s hurdles, obstacles keep us from reaching our short- and long-term goals or becoming a better version of ourselves. Sometimes, we find a way forward by tapping into our strengths. But other times, even after trying hard to find motivation, we need to seek guidance. And just like in the movies, a coach can support us. Life coaches help clients identify goals, discover strengths, and pursue true passions. These coaches also encourage clients to introspect and recognize the unsatisfying aspects of their lives, and based on clients’ inferences, coaches guide them toward a more fulfilling life.

I'd collaborate with a coach to clarify my career goals, identify transferable skills, and develop a targeted job search strategy tailored to remote roles. Through personalized sessions, we'd address any challenges or insecurities, building confidence and resilience. The coach would offer insights on remote work trends, networking tactics, and optimizing online profiles. Together, we'd navigate the job market, refine application materials, and prepare for virtual interviews. With the coach's support, I'd navigate the transition to remote work successfully.

Using SMART+O is an effective framework. This is the usual (Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time set), plus O (outcome). Two important caveats: Don't be tied to a rigid and fixed time frame or outcome, both are compasses or guidelines. By being open to another timeline and destination avoids disappointment for failing to make the exact date or outcome. Your client may achieve faster or slower. The client may end up at a similar but not exact destination. Either way the client has been successful. Schedule regular check-ins to gauge progress, give support when setbacks occur. Build in rewards for small wins along the way. Hold space for them and remain optimistic. Be a constant source of belief and encouragement.

Have the client write down possible sources of where they can learn the needed skills: personal or business contacts, internet, online training, live trainings, etc.. even a mentor. Let the client decide the best course of action for each item and include these in their SMART +O goal planning. Regularly check in with them on progress, problems, and additional supports that are needed to succeed. I recommend having the client do a before and after assessment. One at the start of coaching identifying where they started. The second done at the end, showing them how much they've grown.

A resume' must be focused and relevant. The client can tailor their resume to the specific skills, relevant experience, and particular qualifications of the job they are seeking. Be honest and accurate. Cut out any irrelevant information. They can hire a professional resume' writer if needed for additional feedback. Have them review samples of resumes from the same industry and title they are wanting to achieve for additional inspiration. Your client wants to stand out from all others applying. Encourage them to contact the hiring manager, send a cover letter to the hiring manager. Find a common interest or experience with the hiring manager to build common ground. Check LinkedIn or their company bio to get relevant information on them.

Much of job seeking success is about who you know. Encourage your client to utilize their existing networks, personal and professional, to find opportunities to land their desired position. They can also build their network in person and online, especially LinkedIn. Reaching to new people can expand your reach and options. Helping other job seekers is also a good way to create goodwill and open doors to new possibilities. Be willing to share your network with other job seekers. Connecting and engaging with hiring managers is helpful. Have them to reach out to hiring managers via email, send a cover letter to the hiring manager, build a relationship on commonalties. Your coach should work with you to define what values you have in life. Do you want to live in community, is freedom an important value, independence? They could do the following exercise with you: what should job XY give you? According to your answer, what should that give you? And so on ... then it will be clear why you want to apply for the job. What need should be covered by your dream job and you can develop your goals in connection with your heart and your values.
