The first thing I do when looking for advancement in a specific career field or organization is identify what are the requirements for the advancement. In the military I knew as an E4 what was needed to become an E6 and put actions in place to achieve these requirements. This meant that E5 was an almost certainty. In a career field or organization there are required and preferred KSAOs. I would focus heavily on the preferred and that would help put me in the discussion for advancement. In the HR field I focused on ensuring that I completed my MBA, started working towards my DBA, gathered as much experience as possible that makes me a preferred candidate. Combine this with goal setting, mentoring, and seeking guidance are key.

Once your goals are set, the next step is to find a mentor who aligns with them. Look for someone with experience and success in the areas you're interested in. This could be a senior colleague, a professional within your network, or someone you admire in your field. This is key Which mentor would be the best? 1.Senior person with expertise managing teams and projects 2.Proven expertise in the field that is key to the mentee 3. Understand realistically what is a mentorship program and define clear KPIs A mentor is not a headhunter, will not find a new role for the center, the key goal is help the meter to focus her UNique Value Proposition/ personal brand / set of skills and help her builds an action plan to achieve the career change. Networking, training and visibility are three aspects key to any career change and the mentor can provide advice here
