What do you do if you're not satisfied with the average salary for entry-level Field Service Engineers?

Get in with a company represented by a union and join their apprenticeship. You will get paid a very good rate while you learn.

Once skills are assessed you need to know how to market yourself at the same time have all the required certification for that particular technology or system that the organisation is looking for at that particular time. How you present yourself and your technical know how will determine the rate at which you will get hired.

Open dialog with your employer at least annually regarding what you can do to increase your value to the organization. The best question is..."If I could do one thing this year to increase my value, what would it be?"

In addition to technical knowledge; It is important to be able to deal effectively with customers and their needs. This highlights the importance of a holistic approach to working in this area, combining technical skills with interpersonal skills. The proposed issue to improve the salary situation is the improvement of skills, through obtaining certifications in specific technologies or systems that are highly demanded in the sector. Improving skills not only increases the professional's value in the job market, but can also open up opportunities for career advancement and, consequently, better pay.

I will work with more interest and hard work. I will correct the mistakes made in the past. Given my honesty and hard work, the company will give me a raise so I don't need to look elsewhere.

The apprenticeship program will allow management to provide feedback to the training body to accommodate the company's needs.

Don't be the "I'm only about the money" employee. That does not motivate people to help you. Approach it as if you like to have a plan and you want to increase your contribution and value to the organization every year. Let your management know you are open to their input and want to make sure you don't overlook any opportunities. Ask, "If you were me, what would you do?"

It's always imperative to get feedback from your superior or anyone with more knowledge when it comes to your line of work. Always have room to improve everyday and learn. This will help you to understand on what you need to do to become an expert, hence your rate of pay will eventually go up.

One thing I've found helpful is challenge yourself when meeting new people to find creative ways you can help each other. Would someone I know benefit you? Would expertise I have be of interest to you? Can I better understand your business model? Do you have any creative approaches to challenges that I can learn from? People love to share and rarely do you find people that are genuinely interested.

During the training process, you will meet others going through the training and mentors providing the training. Those relationships will last your entire career.

Team work is always the dream work. No one starts up a career alone there is always someone that holds us up for us to reach the level that we find ourselves at in life. Therefore, it's mandatory that one needs to keep a professional network for support, advice and guidance which will increase your market value.

In my industry it's always been beneficial to be flexible. The more limits you put on yourself the less likely you are to get the best opportunities. Should you buy a home, have lots of kids, join lots of organizations? Perhaps not if you want to be available where and when you are needed.

It is up to the individual to decide the path to success, you alone can make that choice! In numerous situations, I have chosen the better wages. But in others, the people I choose to work alongside is more important than than a couple of bucks.

Just because you have found a job with a good company does not mean you have to stop exploring what other companies are offering. You need to understand that working for a company is not all about the money but it has to benefit you as well for professional growth so if you are in an organisation that offers you a good pay but not growth then work done to revamp you career growth is zero.

If your annual pay increases are not at least keeping pace with inflation, you have to change companies to avoid what is essentially an annual pay cut.
