What do you do if you're a retired Oil and Gas professional trying to maintain your network and connections?

Volunteering and mentoring is what I do. I am President Elect of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and mentor several young professionals. It is very rewarding. ??

Maintaining your network and connections as a retired Oil&Gas professional can be valuable for staying engaged in the industry and accessing opportunities. Here's what you can do: .Join Professional Associations:Stay connected by joining industry-specific associations, such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) or the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). Attend events, conferences, and workshops to network with peers and stay updated on industry trends .Online Networking Platforms: Utilize professional networking platforms like LinkedIn to connect with former colleagues, industry professionals, and potential employers. Share insights, participate in discussions, and showcase your expertise through posts and articles.

Stay active, use professional social media, keep up with the industrial changes. But honestly if retired look out the golf clubs and enjoy your life, spend time with the family who hardly seen you during your times working away in your career.

One thing is staying updated with new applications and participating on a global stages with your network and peers. Another important thing is passing the knowledge and the experiences gathered throughout the years to the youth so they build on where you left. Start regionally then move globally and you will be doing it for again without realizing except that this time you have no pressure of production nor cost and KPIs/KPMs

I have many social platforms, such as LinkedIn, but reaching out to old faces (Alumni, Alma mater) is very rewarding. Back to school can help generate, share, or mold new ideas. Investing in network-building is paramount: These connections help when you need it most (as when job hunting) and help you to give back to others. Great networkers are curious about other people. Ask them about themselves and their work. Let them do the talking about 70% of the time. Please find out how you can help them accomplish their goals; the more you help them, the more likely they will reciprocate. Ask for advice. Ask questions to help the other person uncover answers for him or herself. Network within your existing organization.

Social media allows you to connect with old colleagues and experts in your field. It allows you to follow current trends and technology in the oil and gas space. It also affords you the opportunity to joined professional bodies like SPE among others. It gives insights as which areas you can offer your services either as a consultant or advisor.

The 'professional' networks are also slowly turning in to platforms for political and religious discussions. It is tempting to get in to such polemics but one needs to pitch-in where it interfaces with economics, science or other 'professions'. Socialising petdonally, off-line is the best value proposition. Keep meeting your ex-coleagues, alumni, friends etc. petsonally will provide you wider perspective. Atending seminars or webinars or events should be selected carefully because most of them are sales oriented and promoting their own products or concepts rather than knowledge-sharing.

Stay connected with former colleagues whenever the occasion presents itself, i.e. when traveling. It's important who you know, not necessarily what you know... opportunities will present itself, even if you're not actively looking out. O&G/OFS is evergreen, re-inventing itself continuously, so always learning opportunities, leveraging and applying experiences to come to solutions.

Chances are, by now, you are a world-class expert in your profession; here is what you can offer future professionals in your volunteer time: enrich them with your global insights and international best practices. Integrate them with collaborative programs at quality institutions, empower them with comprehensive soft & hard skills, show them how to become adaptive, flexible, and responsive to O&G industrial changes, and teach them to commit to success through constant innovation skills.

Volunteering your time give you the opportunity to harness and hone your talents and skills. Showcasing your skills makes others to know you. They can also see first-hand what you can deliver. Apart from showcasing your technical skills volunteering also helps you to use your soft skills as well. Like listening to others to hear their challenges, presenting solutions to complex problems,coaching and mentoring the young ones.

Mentorship is an invaluable way to impart the wealth of knowledge and experience accumulated over a lifetime of work. There's simply no substitute for the lessons learned through years of hands-on experience. Upon retirement, individuals may find themselves with ample time and resources, yet risk losing valuable connections and falling out of touch with industry advancements. By providing mentorship, not only do we pass on our expertise, but we also benefit from the fresh perspectives and energy of younger professionals. It's a mutually rewarding experience; while we share our knowledge, we also gain new insights and renewed motivation through interaction with the next generation of industry leaders.

This is one of the best methods to broaden one's perspective. You learn things better only when you begin to teach it to someone. Teaching and mentoring makes you a good student. Especially, the interaction with youngsters brings you surprising insights and contemporary perspective. At the same time the youth need the wisdom and condensed knowledge from the veterans.

The challenge that comes in any oil and gas job can be intriguing but exciting too. When I do decide to retire, I hope I’m capable to help and mentor younger generation. Regardless of age, stimulating the brain makes one feel young. It’ll be a win-win situation. Growth is an endless journey, so the more we share, the more we learn.

Offering to mentor junior intakes will boost your confidence it will also ensure you keep abreast with the industry current trends. It will also ensure you increase your self worth in the industry. It affords you the opportunity to pass those experiences that is not documented on paper. It also gives the mentees the opportunity to improve on practices and processes. Look for cost-cutting measures.

Going into consultancy and advisory roles are a good means of staying active in the industry. Also becoming member of the board of directors which can be an area where your skills can be effectively utilized. Network with other experts . Attending professional bodies and actively engaging in them will also be of immense help in your professional career.

Consulting part-time will help out in keeping your network and and stay active in the industry. It offers the opportunity to still hone your skills and even aquire more as you will be faced with new challenges and opportunities

An additional point to be mentioned is adaptability to change. The industry changes rapidly. Adapt and look for growth opportunities. Curiosity and constant search for knowledge are key.

You can make some paid courses and offer some free course as well. Make provision for feedbacks so that you can improve and welcome ideas from others. Sponsor programs that will spur interests in the Oil and Gas industry. This will keep you relevant and also pass your skills to others.

If I were a retired oil and gas engineer and I wanted to stay connected to the industry, I would consider doing all of the above. When you get the right information, the right contacts; and you can stay in touch with said contacts through gatherings and social media; and if on top of that you’re willing to share these infos and mentor people with a great potential; you put yourself in the best position to help develop yourself and the industry.

I believe, planning retirement is important. Activate retirement plan early in career, so that there is sufficient time to tweak the plan & goal. Retire early, then spend time to enjoy your hobbies, participate in charities etc etc.
