What do you do if you're a recent graduate looking for job opportunities in social impact?

Why wait till you graduate? Personally, I believe that a career in social impact doesn't require you graduating to start. If you spend your four years in College and in that time, Volunteering, Interning, etc. your chances of securing employment significantly increase. Whether you know it or not, what you have shown to a potential employer is your motivation, your drive. That usually doesn't fail

One of the best ways to research is by spending time in some of the roles you have identified as a good fit for your skills and personality. I believe volunteering helps you do that. For example, when I joined the nonprofit industry in 2018, I serial and parallel volunteered in different roles for different organizations for two years before accepting my first management role as Manager of Community Initiatives at PSIFON Org. The experience I got during those two years of "research" helped me during the first few uncertain months at PSIFON.

One of then biggest barriers in the Social Impact space is the lack of industry-wide role titles. This is due to the novelty of the sector and the need to stand out from competitors. What companies don't realise is that by being "creative" with their titles, they are making it difficult for candidates to recognise their vacancies as positions of interest. I always recommend focusing on generic areas (communications, marketing, projects, finance, campaigner, consultant, etc), and combine them with career terms like coordinator, officer, associate, intern, and assistant, to create variations for similar roles. This question is quite vague because there are a number of career paths on the social impact sector. I recommend gaining experience either by volunteering with a local NGO or working in a entry level role to gain experience on the specific area that you plan to work on in the long run. Working on a community based project is a great way to gather hands-on experience and understand how policy making actually affects those at the grassroot level.

I believe that volunteering is a beautiful way to gain relevant experience. It gives hands-on experience and enhances your resume which is great but more importantly, it shows your commitment to solving societal problems. Internships are also a great way to gain experience.

Job-hunting, similar to most things in life, require lots of practice to perfect. Putting yourself on the line and getting rejected over and over again can be extremely hard on your mental health. If you are a first-time jobseeker, you must prioritise your mental health! Here are some tips to making this stage of life more bearable: → Understand that your worth as a person is not determined by job rejections → Rely on friends and family and be open with them, they have most likely gone through a similar thing! → Schedule time off - you will be very tempted to dedicate 24/7 to finding the right job and burn out quickly → Chat with fellow jobseekers to combat feelings of isolation and frustration
