If you are a late-career professional seeking part-time or flexible work opportunities, consider updating your resume and networking in your industry, searching for job openings, exploring consulting or freelancing roles, looking into remote work options, and targeting companies known for supporting flexible work arrangements to increase your chances of finding suitable positions.

As you assess whether to venture into the world of personal consulting, ask yourself a simple question. Why? Get a piece of paper, yes, the old fashioned way, and draw a line down the middle. On the left side list your reasons in rank order. On the right, identify the impact it will have on your lifestyle. When you find enough reasons that align with the lifestyle you wish to maintain, you will know it’s the right decision.

All of the suggestions I’ve read are great. One thing that might help to stand out is to have some of your clients provide testimonials that you can incorporate into a separate section of your CV, LI profile and personal website. Be sure though that it focuses on the problem and result versus a general platitude.

The best advice I can offer is to carefully define your persona and brand. Do you want to be known as a generalist with wide knowledge or a specialist? Opportunities exist for both. But be cognizant of how the services you choose to provide relate to pricing and time. The greater the need for specialized skills the higher your rate should be. These type assignments are typically, but not always, of shorter duration. In summary, define your personal brand, align the skills you bring, and, determine if you want to specialize or be a generalist.

One thing I find useful is to make time to read a book each month. It can be about self improvement, business, technology, etc… or even just a good old fashion novel. The point is to always be curious and always be learning. You might be surprised how much you use these learnings in your business and personal lives.
