What do you do if you're a late career professional looking to retire?

20 years ago I wrote an article titled - “The Extinction of Retirement” - with the population trends, increased longevity, and cost of living into one’s 90s making full retirement unreachable for most. A phased retirement which provides income, community, an ability to contribute, and social engagement is the future. So - if you are going to continue to work 15-20 hours per week, how do you want to spend that time? What would be rewarding and fulfilling? These are critical questions to consider as one approaches the traditional retirement window.

Before retiring, it's crucial to thoroughly assess your finances. This involves understanding your savings, investments, pensions, and any other sources of income you may have. Consider consulting with a financial advisor to ensure you have a clear understanding of your financial situation and how it aligns with your retirement goals.

1. Calculate retirement income from pensions, social security, and savings. 2. Ensure income covers living expenses and desired lifestyle. 3. Identify any financial shortfalls. 4. Adjust investment strategies if needed. 5. Consider delaying retirement for benefit maximization. 6. Review expenses and budget for retirement. 7. 1. I will do my best until the last day. It is not about how you arrive but how you leave. 2. I will look for the things that will keep me busy when I am retired. This is the hardest thing to find out. 3. I will look back and look if something has been missed in my career, so I am able to do it or at least fill the blank. 4. Enjoy the fact that all the hard work already done is going to payback.

When I retire, I will travel more. It doesn't have to be long-distance travel, I would just visit the neighborhood. And of course I would be available with my knowledge and experience to interested parties - depending on the type of service, I would offer it free of charge or for a small fee - a little appreciation is necessary.

This is actually a valid point. It’s ok to sit back and relax when your age hits that retirement number. Be tension free, take up world travel…

As you enter retirement, prioritizing your health is paramount for enjoying this new chapter. Engage in regular health check-ups and maintain an active lifestyle. Retirement is the ideal time to explore outdoor and adventure activities that may have been elusive during your working years. Consider hiking, cycling, kayaking, or even travel adventures that combine physical activity with the exploration of new places. Such activities not only improve physical health but also mental well-being, offering enriching experiences that enhance the quality of your retirement.

Ask yourself if you really WANT to retire! Would you be better off in yourself just stepping back a bit from the work you already do - assuming you might want to, and that’s open to you? How will you keep yourself genuinely interested?

At this time of time in life when person is thinking to retire Plan giving back activities- Join groups where you can share your knowledge and other young professionals to be better. Lifelong learner- One should be a life long learner so enroll yourself in any new activity. Check your wish bucket list.. See what activities are left to do. At last, there is no day to retire. One should be busy till last day of life. Busy in anything but not sitting idle.

When you are deciding to retire, the first thing you want to do is create a vision, for what retirement looks like for you. Today, retirement is personalized , it may mean starting a business, it could mean babysitting grandchildren. It might mean traveling the world as a digital nomad or a missionary. It’s your choice. However you define retirement determines the steps you take thereafter. Create the vision that makes your heart sing and then devise a plan to ensure your vision becomes a reality. This process is great advice not only for retirement but for every thing you desire in life.

Review any employment contracts or agreements you have in place to understand your rights and obligations upon retirement. You might want to talk to legal experts to figure out if you can transition gradually or work in a different capacity if you want. Additionally, review your pension and retirement savings plans to understand the legal implications of accessing these funds and ensure you're maximizing your benefits.
