What do you do if you're laid off in software project management?

If laid off in software project management, I immediately update my resume and LinkedIn profile, network with industry contacts for job leads, and explore opportunities for professional development or certification to enhance my skills. Additionally, I stay proactive in my job search, considering both traditional employment and freelance opportunities, while maintaining a positive and resilient attitude throughout the process.

Self assessment and (multiple) assessments from somebody who has worked closely with you will help in understanding the situation. Using these inputs do a root cause analysis and then take appropriate action. May be it was your first stint as a Project Manager and the project was too complex for you to handle, or, you lack certain expected skills such as negotiation and organization, or, may be there are external reasons for the project to fail and you just need to move on.

It is very important that we first identify areas for improvement. Ultimately, if we have been laid off, we need to assess which skills we need to enhance. This may include technical skills, project management, leadership, or soft skills such as communication and problem-solving. To learn new skills, you can access educational resources or engage with communities and events, with the latter being paramount as they can provide support, networking opportunities, and access to additional learning resources. Finally, it is crucial to stay updated, as the field of technology is constantly evolving with new trends and technologies.

It's very important to select the platform where we want to search for new opportunities carefully. I consider it important to: 1. **LinkedIn**: You can search for specific jobs using advanced search filters and join relevant groups for software project management. 2. **Indeed, Glassdoor, Monster, and SimplyHired** offer a wide variety of job opportunities in the field of software project management. 3. Specialized websites such as **Stack Overflow Jobs, GitHub Jobs, and Dice** typically offer a wide range of opportunities, including project management roles. 4. Engage in online professional networks and discussion groups related to software project management. They can provide support, advice, and networking opportunities.

Although it's somewhat obvious, it's necessary to emphasize that in an interview, one should always be oneself, respond with sincerity, and be honest, as there's no point in preparing everything, being selected, and then not being able to perform the job for which we were chosen. In my view, preparing for an interview involves more of a review of our entire background, making a list of our strengths from our experience, and how they can be crucial for the new position. Always remember to reinforce our experience in everything required for the new opportunity. It's also important to research the company and ask questions in the interview about anything we need to know that may affect us, such as work-life balance plans, flexibility, etc.

Getting laid off is bit shocking and unpleasant event for anybody in any industry. But we should look the other side of the coin, we should firstly assess the situation, anybody working with us can help in understanding. Then we should find any new skill we can learn and get more opportunities. With this, we should prepare for the interviews. Try applying for interview and practice using mock interviews. We should not go all down if one opportunity is closed, instead rise in the problems and explore new opportunities embark on them.
