What do you do if you're given more responsibilities and need to lead a team for a promotion?

As a manager who has promoted my sales officers to sales managers what I have observed in my experience is that when people step up to take more responsibility it means they have understood the balance needed between delegation and prioritization. So when one does an introduction of weakness and strengths it gives a sense of clarity on what the end goal of a promotion means and what are the needed skills to develop for the same. Given this is the scenario at hand any upgrading of skills needed would need a localized environment to test and learn with scope to do mistakes least when they are given a leadership promotion they make the same mistake. More responsibility means more experience to experiment and make newer mistakes to learn fast.

Before diving into a newly promoted role, it's essential to take a step back and assess both the needs of your team and the objectives of the promotion. This involves understanding the current state of the team, including strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Additionally, clarifying the expectations and goals associated with the promotion ensures alignment between personal aspirations and organizational objectives. By conducting this assessment upfront, you can develop a strategic plan to leverage your strengths, address any gaps, and effectively lead your team towards success in your new role.

You have 2 choices: Either you take it or not. Each stage of your life represents different challenges (at work and off work) - choose if you want to challenge yourself by taking on a team or not. There's no right or wrong. If you decide to take the promotion, do the following steps: 1. Define success metrics and criteria with your direct manager - ask if you can take hard decision as to the composition of your team or not 2. Meet each team member that will report to you and get their views, get to know them at a deeper level 3. Meet the previous team leader and get their view, challenges and handover 4. Once taken over, share your views on success and how you want to achieve that

Effective delegation serves as a dynamic instrument for growth, particularly when managers apply it judiciously with the appropriate team members, accompanied by consistent follow-up and robust support. Example: Delegating a task (scheduling an event) to your team member, you have to be sure the person knows how to use -competent- the scheduling tool, how to communicate with stakeholders to confirm their presence. And be there for follow-up and support wherever required.

Well Conflict management is a tricky situation when you are a first time leader managing a team. First you have to understand everyone has a different perspective on each situation and each are right in their own way. Once you understand this, its also equally important to allow each one to voice their opinions. Always, put you on the front seat and ask your team to solve the need, by empowering them on these conversations, they feel valued and that prevents minor disagreements. Diplomacy is key in handling conflicts and always take a decision where at least 80% of the team is inclined. You have to strongly understand a point that you can never satisfy 100% at any point of time irrespective of whatever the situation is.

I believe that, as a leader, I didn't want to be considered at the "head" of the Team but, rather, at its "heart". Being fully embedded and involved, not only gives you a much characterized picture of how the group dynamics work but, also, provides a "hands on" experience which is of unparalleled value when it comes to understand some areas that may not be your daily business. This is why, throughout my entire career, rather than sitting at a desk I have: pushed aircrafts, swept the floors, purchased supplies, made coffee, generated invoices, carried out paperwork, worked on financial matters, etc. etc.

Being on the battlefield, in contact with key stakeholders and evaluating opportunities to improve the plan will be important. Creating an independent, self-responsible team is crucial for training successors and taking on new responsibilities

New managers should embody the principles of leadership by setting a strong work ethic, demonstrating dedication to achieving goals, and being consistently available to support their team. Leadership extends beyond effort; it involves proactive problem-solving, confronting challenges head-on, and devising solutions that serve the interests of all stakeholders.

You have to be unique as a leader to achieve your promotion. You have to gain the confidence of the team with your ethics. Once you gain the confidence of your team members then you can start distributing your work load, however much it is and with their support you can achieve your tasks easily. The entire team and the management must see you as an example because of your ethics and diplomatic approach to conflicts and pave the way for your success and promotion.

Keep your emotions in check While you are assessing needs, understanding the new team, helping them grow and become better, it becomes essential to keep a check whether you yourself are going through all of these too. Have a colleague/senior check on you every now and then, assess how you feel about leading the team by writing it down, and seek support wherever required. Remember, the teammates are a part of the organization too and the bigger vision, which is something that can be highlighted while seeking help.

The most important thing to consider is if you want to lead a team! It's not for everybody and that's OK. It seems easy to say I want to chase the promotion-the money, status, whatever comes with it, but I have massive respect for folks who are self-aware enough to know that the activities that are part of leading a group are not for them. It's also important to realize that most first level "leadership" roles are much more about "managership." In either case, you can think about the time you'll spend with the P3S model-people, their problems, processes & strategy. Your first group lead role will surprise you-all of your time will end up dealing with People & their Problems (as you gain experience points, the other P&S come into play)

Prioritize and negotiate deadlines for activities and deliveries for both functions, review plans for the new area and spend time to validate or change. define quick wins and validate plan hypotheses to approve long and medium term strategy.
