But it's still essential to articulate what you do that's actually valuable--your value proposition--what people get in exchange for giving you money, and what you provide that's better than the other guy. Which really requires you to focus on getting known for being good for one thing. You can be good at many things, but you need a thing to be the go-to guy for, even if it's to a limited group of people.

Show off what you can do. But what you are showing off should be impressive. The quality has to be there--what you show off can't be a grab bag of everything you've done, but rather a showcase of the best. (Better a few good pieces than a mix of good pieces and mediocre pieces).

Tech is a distraction. There's no need to be at the bleeding edge, unless being at the edge of what's possible is what you do. Possible exception being communication technologies-- visualization and representation in a way that bridges the gaps to non-experts.

Understand the needs of the community, not just the wants. Specifically, what community needs will a generation hence. If all you've done is satisfy short-term needs (and complied with planning reqs) you've fundamentally failed as a planner. Planning is fundamentally different from most professional services, in that your clients aren't the beneficiaries of your efforts. Planner get paid to provide the long view on the future effects of present decisions. Which means acting to mitigate foreseable harms.
