When you're hit with tough interview questions, keep these tips in mind: Stay cool: Take a breath and don't panic. Think on your feet: Even if you're stumped, give it your best shot. Be honest: If you don't know the answer, it's okay to say so. Use examples: Share real-life stories to illustrate your points. Stay positive: Keep a positive attitude, and don't let one tough question throw you off track. Just be yourself and show them what you're made of. :)

Mirror: Repeat last three words of question. Wait for the person elaborates. Paraphrase to your benefit: Paraphrase to best emphasize the information aiding you. Use time: Those questions buy you 10 - 30 seconds. Use it. Segment: Answer parts of questions that emphasizes your strong suits. Qualified answers and lexicon: Answer difficult sections with qualifiers like "If I understand you correctly"; "for the most part"; "to a degree." Interviewing them: Companies are losing droves to retirement and home workers. Employees market! If the counterpart asks probing questions, maybe they are a savvy, apt mentor. Firstly, remember, it's OK to not no the answer to every question! Start by taking a deep breath and pause to gather your thoughts. Think about the question and if you have actually understood what has been asked, it's absolutely fine to ask for the question to be re-worded. It is also OK to say "I am not entirely sure" and be completely honest. Keep smiling and always ask at the end to maybe revisit that question or to ask "if there is are any answers you would like re answered or elaborated on?" This gives you another chance to answer! Always try to think of a few examples of scenarios at work where you did well or had good feedback and then try and tailor that scenarios to what they are asking from you.

Sometimes we overthink a question wondering if they're trying to set a trap or if the interviewer has a magic power and discovered something deep and dark about our past... most of the time it's just an innocent question that our own brain related to something that bothers us. Fully understanding and clarifying what the interviewer means will allow us to provide an answer that "sounds and makes sense" to them while showing we're good listeners and articulated speakers.

Make sure you understand clearly what you have been asked for, and confirm your understanding. It will give the advantage of time to think and to reply more accurate.

It is imperative that you understand the narrative and the implied question within. Understanding the context and real ask of the question is very important. It is always a good strategy to ask clarification questions until you understand the ask clearly and then paraphrase your understanding for the interviewer to confirm. You will be surprised with the additional amount of information you gather through this simple exercise of understanding the ask clearly and knowing the context (where are we? where do we want to go? what’s driving the change?). Having been on both sides of case interviews, I feel that this skill of striving for clarity can be adopted in all professional communications and not just the interviews.

Stay calm, take a deep breathe, then structure your answer in such a way to showcase your skills and showing the positive side of the situation.

Seeking clarification is expected behaviour. But your clarification should be relevant and appropriate to the context of the question being asked. Or they may ask about general knowledge or regarding politics. Don’t fall for it as companies don’t encourage political or religious affiliation. It’s ok to aware of what is going around but not emotionally involved with it.

If I encounter a question to which I don't know the immediate answer, I would honestly admit it. However, I would follow up by expressing my willingness to tackle the situation by drawing parallels to past experiences. By relating the question to a similar scenario I've encountered in a previous role, I can offer insights into my problem-solving approach and thought process. Additionally, I would share my initial thoughts and ideas on how I might address the situation, demonstrating a proactive attitude. Shooting without drawing will most of the times result in shooting your own feet. Improvising stories during an interview will most of the times fire back on you and complicate matters. Nobody expects you to know everything of everything, and during an interview, just as important as your degree of knowledge, is your degree of reliability. Asking questions to understand better the issue and requesting time to research it are many times better responses than straight answers.

In my experience interviewing candidates, I prefer to be told that they don't know the answer or that they haven't had that experience. I appreciate that they give me an honest answer instead of trying to force an answer that is not attached to reality. For me that speaks well of a candidate.

There is research which shows people enjoy stories more when they know the ending. So, help your interviewer enjoy their experience with you by starting at the outcome. That will enable them to relax and listen to all the details you share without trying to guess how your story ends.
