What do you do if you're considering a career change into nonprofit leadership?

Having been there and done this myself, I would say "give it a try". I found the move to nonprofit leadership to be extremely rewarding. It's not a walk in the park - things are arguably tougher in nonprofits than they are in the commercial world - but the fact that you get to make a positive impact in the world is a great reason to get out of bed each day.

Assessing fit requires a holistic understanding of both your aspirations and the unique demands of the nonprofit environment, ensuring a meaningful and fulfilling career path. I was 26 when I first became an executive director, and I did not fully appreciate the necessary qualities for leadership roles, such as empathy, resilience, and a collaborative mindset. I recommend first looking for opportunities to immerse yourself in the nonprofit world, volunteering, or networking to gain firsthand experience and insight into the challenges and rewards of nonprofit work. Evaluate how well your skills and aspirations match the demands of nonprofit leadership, including fundraising, stakeholder management, and strategic planning.

It is imperative to source leadership with experience and funding knowledge in the nonprofit sector. They should deeply understand grant writing, donor relations, and financial management. A good Executive Director must possess connections and contacts in the funding/donor world, continuously expanding their network to secure necessary resources for the organization's projects and programs. As a grant writer, I often encounter new nonprofits relying too much on my expertise alone. However, an Executive Director must be proficient in grant writing skills, able to review and approve all grants before submission, and, most importantly, establish meaningful relationships with potential funders.

Although the following experience shared may not directly address the current question, it is still relevant. In my role as a chartered director, I assess whether to volunteer for a nonprofit by conducting a thorough evaluation. This evaluation involves determining if I can align with the organization on a personal and professional level. Additionally, I conduct research on the organization's culture, values, missions, and vision. I also seek feedback from trusted individuals to provide me with an honest perspective of the organization.

Consider how the role would align with both professional and personal goals, taking into account potential changes in work-life alignment (schedule, travel, hours etc.) It's essential to recognize any gaps or invisible barriers that may impact your success in the position and develop a realistic plan to address them. By being authentic and thoughtful in your assessment, you can create a path that aligns with your values and aspirations while setting yourself up for a fulfilling and successful career in nonprofit leadership.

It is really important to understand what you're getting yourself into! Nonprofit work is more than a job. It's both a passion and a work style & a unique sector all of its' own. 1. Ask questions - meet with nonprofit leaders, volunteers, donors etc. make sure you get a first hand account of the ecosystem to make sure it's a fit. 2. Research and learn about nonprofits. Understand the structure, makeup and terminology associated with the industry. 3. Know what role you want to play in building, growing or leading an organization. 4. Be willing to clean the toilets...every nonprofit job I've ever had, this falls under "other duties as assigned." If you don't love the mission so much that you're willing to do this, the career isn't for you!

If you can, put your toe in the water. Can you serve on a nonprofit Board before diving in. Use your network and have coffee with nonprofit leaders. Hear their perspective too.

The way you communicate can quickly boost or undermine your credibility with them. * Never call it a "business" or "company." It's a "nonprofit," "501c3," or "organization." * "Profit" is a taboo. Focus instead on increasing mission impact (meals served, families helped, etc.). * Remove "TGIF" from your vocabulary. When you're committed to the mission you don't watch the clock like that. * Biz 'splaining is the worst. ("Businesses do this so nonprofits should too.") With good communication, nonprofiteers will value your experience.

One of the best things you can do is put yourself out there and start meeting people in the field. Look for local nonprofit events, workshops, or conferences to attend. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself, ask questions, and express your genuine interest in making a difference. You never know who might become a valuable mentor or even recommend you for your dream job down the line.

When considering a career change into the nonprofit sector, realize that most positions (except leadership) do not pay well. This has been slowly improving, but unfortunately there is a financial opportunity cost associated with doing mission-driven work. Because of this, it is important to do some exploration regarding your wants and needs before making this decision. Also, I highly recommend starting/maintaining good mental and physical health practices ahead of time to build up resilience against burnout (something that a lot of people experience in this sector).
