What do you do if you're a beginner in Program Management and want to develop your leadership skills?

Seek out resources such as books, articles, online courses, and mentorship opportunities to deepen your understanding of the role.

Learn from experienced program managers and industry leaders by observing their behaviors, strategies, and decision-making processes. Seek out mentorship opportunities or informal guidance from seasoned professionals who can provide insights and advice based on their own experiences.

To gain hands-on experience, proactively take on leadership roles within projects and pursue volunteer positions where you lead initiatives. Assuming responsibility for tasks and projects allows you to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world scenarios. Continuous self-reflection, feedback-seeking, and staying informed about industry trends will contribute to your ongoing leadership development, ensuring a dynamic and effective approach in the evolving landscape of program management.

Leadership is a combination of trait(innate) and skill. One needs a conscious effort to assess innate strengths and also learn the skill by practice. Best way to learn is start leading tasks, activities, projects and programs and learn through failures and success. Observe the behaviours of leaders in the organization and seek mentorship. With all due respect to the courses and books, practically implementing things would teach swiftly and effectively.

I've personally found the following to be super helpful: a) Read from a couple of reliable sources like HBR about relevant frameworks of managing programs. Usually one may find programs are a part of some overarching projects or vice versa. b) Align the program's core features and ones own responsibility with that of the framework and prioritize actions/ frame SMART goals in a doc c) Buddy up if possible with a colleague and keep revisiting this program doc once in a while maybe biweekly/ monthly. Keep adding to the learning and change priorities on the go if needed.

Identify the essential skills and competencies required for effective leadership in program management, such as communication, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and stakeholder management. Take proactive steps to develop and refine these skills through training, coursework, workshops, and hands-on experience. Seek feedback from colleagues, supervisors, and mentors to identify areas for improvement and focus your efforts on continuous learning and growth.

Look for opportunities to apply your leadership skills in real-world settings, such as leading small projects, coordinating cross-functional teams, or taking on additional responsibilities within your organization. Take ownership of your projects and initiatives, demonstrating initiative, accountability, and a willingness to take on challenges.

Build relationships and networks within your organization and industry to expand your sphere of influence and gain support for your ideas and initiatives. Lead by example, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence in everything you do.
