What do you do if you're asked about servant leadership initiatives in an interview?

I have had the pleasure of introducing the concepts of Servant Leadership into a few global organisations. The key things to consider is that being successful with SL demands: 1) that everyone helps each other in adopting the new mindset. The leaders need help with truly letting go of power, and the employees need help to step up on to the new invisible platform in front of them. Both will fail, again and again, and this exactly is a moment to show SL. 2)The journey begins with selfawareness, substituting the superficial “just come and ask me if you need help” to “how can I best help you right now?” The proactive offering help, and the readily opening up for being helped is what should be trained. SL is for everyone in the team.

While maintaining the focus on the employees and company objectives, you can highlight how you have worked outside your normal job scope to enable/support others so that they can maximize their unique skillsets and contributions all in alignment with company goals.

In my professional role over the previous three years have established opportunities to implement servant leadership initiatives in collaboration with the All-Employee Survey. Opportunities which have aided specific groups and many leaders— step outside of the next bullet on the to-do list- and truly understand and recognize what their teams need to be successful. I am thankful to be part of a #culturalrenovation at our facility and am working to help more facilities do the same.

Acknowledgment, Attention, and Affection are the foundation of successful servant leadership.
