What do you do if you're already a team facilitator but want to transition to a leadership role?

My favorite aspect of my facilitator/project manager role was the “variety” in the projects themselves, such as project scope, key stakeholders, and the areas and levels of the organization represented. Your facilitator skills (delegation, relationship-building, cross-functional knowledge, and adaptability) will translate well as you grow in your career. Find ways to stretch yourself and facilitate/lead as many different “types” of projects as you can. Seek projects in areas where you aren’t as familiar. If all of your projects have been narrow scope, find a broad cross-functional project to lead (or vice versa). And seek project opportunities with different levels of the company. Those connections along the way are invaluable.

I agree with all. Also consider the transition is fairly easy as Facilitation is a leadership skill. Good listening asking questions is key to successful communication, a key leadership skill.

Becoming a facilitator often involves a winding journey, during which you acquire a myriad of skills that can transform you into an exceptional leader. My crucial advice is to ensure that the outcomes of your facilitation efforts are both measurable and focused on results. This approach not only impresses internal and external decision-makers but also demonstrates your effectiveness in driving tangible progress.

One thing that always helps me, is to submerge myself in the field aspect I want to learn about. Make yourself available to help, and most importantly show how dedicated you are to your project, clients, and colleagues!

I want to add that learning from other leaders is crucial, including those who may not exemplify effective leadership. Understanding their shortcomings can provide valuable insights into what not to do and how to navigate challenges more effectively.

Select and engage daily with your leader/mentor at your work and observe; ask questions and gain key insights on what makes them a great leader and what skills can you learn and apply. Be a sponge of knowledge but learn to apply it in business

The knowledge alone is not enough, and you will need to actively research & seek opportunities for advancement, such as promotions or lateral moves, and express your readiness to take on additional responsibilities. To add to this, consider speaking to senior leaders within your organization for mentorship as they can provide valuable insights about what to expect, and support with honest/transparent feedback bout your leadership potential.

Gathering improvement areas from every possible opportunity is critical. To not just wait for yearly feedback but to understand the responses from peers/managers in each of our approaches (to try and read the room), identify their perspectives and encourage them to open up with their feedback would really help.

Continuous learning and take calculated risk: Stay updated on industry trends, leadership best practices, and emerging technologies through reading, attending workshops or webinars, and participating in relevant training programs. Demonstrating a commitment to ongoing learning and growth will strengthen your candidacy for leadership roles. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone and take on challenging assignments or projects that stretch your capabilities. Embrace opportunities for growth and learning, even if they involve some degree of risk or uncertainty.

I agree with Iky that a good facilitator can be a great leader, and vice versa. Many of the qualities that make a good facilitator, such as guiding a team, navigating unplanned situations, being open to learning, and giving and receiving feedback, as well as maintaining a high professional standard, are essential for both roles.
