Take notes, especially if you find yourself asking the same question(s) over and over. MASTER hand skills when it comes to building harness and wiring repairs. Do this and you’ll be an avionics star!

Formal education can be overrated depending on the extent of your aviation background. There is A LOT of electrical theory that does not come into play as an avionics tech. Being aware of the broad spectrum of systems used in GA and Business / Corporate aviation and their general purpose is a good start. From there, the best way to go is OJT being attached at the hip to someone who knows these systems, knows how to troubleshoot them THOROUGHLY, and can teach in a way that is easy to understand.

This is ESSENTIAL! I worked with a young guy who did 2 years at a technical college, spent about $30k for his education, and didn’t get his monies worth. They didn’t spend much time using test equipment, pitot/static certs, cordial cable terminations, etc. I took him under my wing for 5 years and that kid ended up taking an avionics tech position at another shop before quickly being promoted to shop supervisor. Ask lots of questions, read the manuals, and work hard.

Nothing beats hands on immersion in the product. If resources and time permit, work closely with veteran avionics line technicians and installers to truly get the habds on approach to system understanding and troubleshooting. Although the term "Tribal knowledge" is often balked, it's an important tool to use.
