What do you do if your virtual team lacks creativity and innovation?

In my previous role as a Project Manager, I've frequently encountered situations where the team's creativity seemed stifled. To address this, I prioritize open dialogue to uncover underlying issues, whether stemming from fatigue, waning motivation, interpersonal conflicts, or other factors. However, merely pinpointing the causes often isn't sufficient. To augment this approach, I implemented the Creativity Wheel tool, enabling the team to identify key pillars for enhancing creativity and setting realistic goals. This approach fosters team commitment to actively addressing these pillars and driving progress.

5 ways to improve your creative thinking -Create your own “Three Ifs” *(1) What would happen if I change it (the object/ system/ social relationship, etc)? *(2) What would I change or improve about this object if I wanted to use it in 10 years? *(3) What would I do if I had a one-million-dollar investment to improve it? -Practice dreaming. -Make time for cohesive creative thinking. -Learn to pitch your ideas (in an elevator) -Bounce ideas off others.

Leveraging my experience in cross-cultural event planning and wellness coaching, I've found that mixing structured schedules with flexible, creative periods amplifies team innovation. A technique I use is "creative sprints" where team members intensely focus on brainstorming for short bursts, followed by intervals for reflection and relaxation. This rhythm, inspired by fitness principles, encourages diverse thinking and rejuvenates the mind, proving crucial for sustained creativity in virtual settings. It's about balancing discipline with freedom, ensuring creativity flows as naturally as it does in physical collaboration spaces.

Many times, creativity and innovation thrive amidst trial and error. Encouraging creativity necessitates embracing the possibility of mistakes. As team leaders, it's imperative to recognize that mistakes are opportunities for learning and growth. By fostering a culture where mistakes are viewed as valuable lessons, we empower our teams to continually innovate and evolve.

This entails honing interpersonal skills like active listening and providing constructive feedback. Techniques such as brainstorming sessions, mentoring, and peer learning can be instrumental in developing these skills within the team. Moreover, given the prevalence of remote work, leveraging technology is essential to support seamless communication. Utilizing tools such as video calls, data sharing platforms, and collaborative software facilitates remote collaboration and ensures that communication remains robust despite physical distance.

Provide autonomy and resources for team members to explore and implement their ideas, celebrating and recognizing creative contributions along the way.
