Regular conversations between the team and the leader will always keep the team members on track whether they are doing a good job, need some advice, are looking for ideas or suggestions, etc. When conversations become regular, it becomes easier to acknowledge all the efforts done by them with constant appreciation whenever there is a job well done, small rewards like maybe taking them out for a coffee, recognition through sending emails with the upper management copied. These subtle motivational bursts will definitely make a huge difference.

It is difficult to deny - if concrete examples are set out in a cogent report - that work is not being done; on the contrary, demonstrating that value ought to bring the team deserved recognition. This will appeal both to the members of the team and to senior management.
