What do you do if your team is struggling to work together?

The root problem is almost always a lack of trust between team members, but not necessarily between all of them. I say this based on over 25 years of resolving issues with teams, and also my masters thesis on the neuroscience of trust in leadership and teams. Address trust and other issues will be much easier to resolve.

Identifying the Root causes of a problem is a permanent way of solving such problem. Root causes of team members finding it difficult working together include - Conflict (address it and eliminate the cause) - Lack of trust (honesty should be encouraged among all) - Lack of team bonding or collaborative skills. - Lack solid relationship - Poor rapport and knowledge sharing and so on. Work on the root cause and encourage open-mind in the team as a leader, free expression without judgement too.

Enhancing team collaboration begins with self-awareness. It's vital to know that while nearly 90% of professionals believe they are self-aware, only about 15% truly are. Without self-awareness, effective collaboration, communication, and empathy within a team are virtually impossible. Leaders must first embark on a journey of self-discovery, often requiring external facilitation to overcome inherent biases. This process not only benefits individual leaders but sets a precedent for the entire organization, fostering a culture where self-awareness and mutual understanding are valued and nurtured.

Understanding the root cause of a problem is akin to shining a light on a dark path; it illuminates the way forward. By identifying factors such as communication breakdowns, trust issues, or skill gaps within your team, you can navigate toward effective solutions. Evaluating elements like vision, strategy, and feedback systems provides a compass for guiding your team toward success. With a clear understanding of the underlying issues, targeted efforts can be made to foster cohesion, productivity, and growth.

In case we find struggle within team then we need to analyse the reason for not synerging together, We would build the inclination for common goal of the task assigned. Assigning proper role to proper person to help the teamwork to get the work done. Giving appreciation to performers and giving inputs for the team mates when someone misses the assigned role. Making understand that keeping personal Ego aside while performing any task helps to open and get the work done in smoothly. Understanding your key role and helping each other ( not peeping the nose on others task )helps to get insite to perform well hence minimize the struggle in performance.

I had a situation where 3 team members weren’t communicating. They would only return each other’s email, texts and phone calls not very often if at all. There were definitely personality differences. When I sorted through it. It was one of the individuals that the other two would not respond to. Before I was able to make any more decisions an opportunity presented itself that I took advantage of. We were scheduled for a company outing fishing trip. It just so happened that each boat would hold 3 people. We needed teams of 3 for a tournament style competition. You guessed it. I made up the teams and put those 3 together in the same boat. At the end of the day they fished together won the tournament and we never had another issue.

Effective communication is of greatest importance. Often, communication breakdowns go unnoticed until unrest surfaces. To communicate successfully, one must prioritize active listening to comprehend the underlying issues. It is crucial to listen with the sole intention of understanding, as many individuals tend to formulate responses while the conversation unfolds. By enhancing listening skills, communication can serve as the cornerstone for fostering a team's collaborative spirit and achieving shared goals.

Are you communicating or just talking? To properly communicate, you must also have a habit of listening to understand rather than you listening to reply. How open is your door? How well do you communicate and commend the team?

In addition to co-created goals, also define a set of rules on how the team wants to work together towards these goals (also make sure to include celebrations and fun items to this list as well). This helps to define a better team atmosphere when it comes to collaboration.

Collaboratively establish clear, achievable goals that align with the team's objectives and individual strengths. Involve team members in goal-setting to ensure ownership and commitment. This is essential when working in a team. Shared goals provide a common purpose and direction, fostering unity and motivation to work together toward success.

Ensuring that clear goals are set and understood by all involved. Ask what is needed to achieve the goals set as a team, either it be training, equipment or simply the reassurance of there skills. Celebrate when those are achieved and discuss what happened if goals are not met.

Identification of root cause and clear communication are the keys to main door, further realistic goals based on skill set available within team add further values followed by other traits.

Positive reinforcement & understanding, capitalising on Team strengths can bring team together! Coupled with consistent communication with Team!

Monitor Progress and Provide Feedback: Regularly monitor the team’s progress towards their goals and provide constructive feedback to help course-correct as needed. Celebrate successes and milestones along the way to boost morale and motivation. Be proactive in addressing any issues or conflicts that arise, and work collaboratively with the team to find solutions.

I have always appreciated the synergies a team brings together. A wide range of personalities, work styles and distinctive cultures. In my experience, a thorough check of each member's contribution needs to be done for a successful functioning. I have always purposely made team members with opposite styles work together and achieve fantastic results. This model has always worked successfully because the efforts are not individual and are counted for the team. This enables them to break the barriers and further build amazing rapport. Through this model of team selection through diversity, I have made people build friends and bonds for life. A supportive Leader always sees the distinctness of the members to be able to take such risks.

Embrace the diversity of skills, perspectives, and experiences within the team. Recognize and celebrate each team member's unique strengths and contributions. Encourage collaboration by leveraging individual talents and fostering a culture of mutual respect and appreciation.

Identifying each member's strengths, not their weaknesses is key. Tasking to their strengths allows each member to feel empowered and encourages them to give their best effort. Acknowledging that each member brings unique experiences and training to the group often lessens conflict.

It’s important you build a team environment that prioritizes understanding diverse perspectives among it’s members, promoting inclusivity, respect, and collaboration for effective problem-solving.

As a leadership consultant for over forty years I would gather my team to learn from setbacks. Using the skill of non-judgemental reflective listening to ascertain the issues and check my understanding of the teams concerns I would identify the constraints and establish a plan with them to resolve the situation.

Encourage everyone to suggest solutions without judgment. Prioritize solutions that target the root cause and strive to meet everyone's needs as much as possible. Agree on a plan. Select a solution that everyone can commit to. Define roles, responsibilities, and timelines clearly for implementing the solution. Regularly follow up with the team to see how the solution is working and make adjustments if necessary. Celebrate successes and address any remaining challenges.

There are many elements to conflict resolution, but one element that often gets overlooked, is engaging the individuals who have the conflict in working together directly on creating their own solution. Employees who have a conflict are many times embarrassed and resentful when a manger becomes involved to “referee” a tough situation. An effective strategy is to ask the individuals involved to offer solutions themselves about how to resolve the conflict putting the accountability in their hands. The supervisor then becomes a facilitator and coach vs. a babysitter. But you have to establish ground rules, time lines and implement a system to monitor and follow up on progress.

Its important to understand the issues the team is facing and try to solve them. It's a good idea to understand individually and offer collaborative solutions. Then you may discuss as a team and in the solution mode. Share your expectations and give them examples and way forward on how by coming together the team will be benefited. You may also look at team building exercise which can help them connect personally and professionally.

Organize team building activities and exercises to help strengthen relationships, build trust, and improve communication among team members. These activities can range from informal social gatherings to structured team-building workshops and retreats. Encourage participation and engagement to foster a sense of camaraderie and unity within the team.

Considering we spend more waking hours with our coworkers than with our own family, it's important to relax and enjoy some fun. If it's not enjoyable, it might be time to consider changing roles or even the company.

If your team is struggling to work together, it's important to address the issues openly and directly. Here are some steps to take: 1. Identify the root cause: Work with the team to understand what's causing the issues. It could be miscommunication, unclear roles, conflicting priorities. 3. Mediate conflicts: Address any conflicts or disagreements promptly and impartially to find mutually acceptable solutions. 4. Celebrate successes: Recognize and celebrate achievements as a team to boost morale and motivation. Overall, building a strong team requires patience, effort, and a willingness to address issues constructively.

Conduct surveys to gather insight on the diverse interests of employees in order to generate ideas for team-building activities or social events. Encourage the team to vote on a selection of options to choose the activity and promote participation. This approach can facilitate bonding and the development of stronger relationships among team members.

I share this from the context of building and fostering strong sales teams. The salespeople of today win much differently than in the past. On any team you will have your top tier performers, your middle achievers and a subset that is underperforming. Where you can win is by fostering an idea-sharing culture. Host regular team meetings where the focus is not just solely on pipeline performance and metrics. Have your team share strategy, what’s working, what strategies are top performers using that others can benefit from? Determine if those top performers or middle pack performers are willing to accept a leadership role even if they don’t yet have the title of a leader. Have them become a mentor. Then watch them stay with your org.

Clarify Roles and Expectations: Ensure everyone understands their responsibilities and how they contribute to the team’s goals to minimize confusion and conflict. Promote Team Building Activities: Organize team-building exercises or bonding activities to strengthen relationships and improve cooperation. Address Conflict Constructively: Facilitate discussions to resolve conflicts promptly and constructively, focusing on finding mutually beneficial solutions. Provide Support and Resources: Offer support, training, and resources to help team members develop and grow.

Sometimes you may be the problem. One day I had an employee who I could tell was a bit upset. The employee did not want to discuss what was bothering them. As the day went on the employees’ disposition did not improve and finally I asked them to go for a walk with me out of the office area. I asked again what was bothering the employee and they stated it was me. Turns out a statement or decision did not sit well with this employee. My intention and their interpretation did not align well causing friction. After a few minutes of questions, answers and discussion about the topic, the employee was back on board.

This may be a difficult answer for some, But as a leader, it is important to self reflect and take any responsibility for any shortcomings in conveying or enforcing expectations or cultural adherence. Take some time for self-reflection and hit the reset button if needed. To begin a reset, bring everyone togther and communicate openly and honestly with your team. Share your observations about the current challenges and your vision going forward. Involve your team in defining the desired behaviors and expectations to increase their buy-in and ownership of the changes. Give them a stake in the outcome. Leading by example and rewarding individuals and the team for the new behaviors and expectations will be crucial for success.

I agree with most of what’s already been said. For me it makes a difference if it’s just a group of people expected to work well together or people actually working as a team. The former is subject to all kinds of potential issues that could take a lot of work to correct. But a team that actually shares identifying & measuring goals, shares decision making, & mutually shares consequences of outcomes, generally gets to the root of performance issues quickly.
