What do you do if your team is resistant to trying new ideas and taking risks?

The same that I would do if an important client is resisting the proposed idea/solution i.e. I will convince them by explaining all Pros and Cons and address all their concerns. I will explain to them why taking this risk is important and apart from the company how this will help them to excel in their careers. It is of utmost importance that the team working on the idea and all key stake holders are comfortable with the idea/strategy and are willing to take the required risk/stretch. Else as soon as you face any problem during execution moral of team will go down and instead of looking for way around/solution they will have negative approach towards it.

It is important to approach the situation with empathy and understanding. I recommend fostering a culture of open communication and collaboration within the team. Encourage team members to share their concerns and perspectives, and actively listen to their feedback. Provide opportunities for team members to participate in decision-making processes and offer support for experimenting with new ideas. Highlighting the potential benefits of innovation and risk-taking can help motivate team members to step out of their comfort zones. When team members see their leader embracing innovation and taking calculated risks, they are more likely to follow suit.

It is important to explain to the team the concept behind the change and how it will help in imroving the overall performance by either enhancing the efficiancy or saving time and cost

Involve the team rather than you are doing the stuff. That definitely improve team performance in long run and help them to grow.

Success is squarely dependent on complexity free / confusion free and high quality communication. The best way to check out if my communication has gone through well is to ask one of team members to articulate what he or she understood and if that happens to be in alignment with what I wanted, check out with the entire team if they too endorse the same interpretation. With this approach, the first bottleneck of communication failure leading to the project failure is eliminated right upstream. Secondly let the team appreciate the distinct benefits of newer ideas / newer ways of working vis a vis exponential growth oppurtunities we have on the mission undertaken. This would ignite their energy levels thus enaancing the success percentage

It is very important to communicate the vision and reason for any new ideas and what are pros and cons as well. It should be well presented with benefits, improvement and help in career growth. Set some example to motivate the team

Resistance to change and to new ideas is always an opportunity. Feeling uncomfortable is a natural reaction and as a business transformation leader, I take every opportunity to challenge the team, push the limits of their creativity and leverage their uncomfortable zone to spark reactions towards potential solutions. I have experienced that when team members are not engaged in being part of the solution because they do not see any value or just have no interest, when I create intentional roadblocks to make them feel the urgency for a change, people discover hidden talents or skills they have never used before and then they become transformative team members that continue to improving internal processes and are more efficient and effective.

I have found this a highly effective way to get the workforce "bought in" on a process change as people feel like the change is less of a top down decision. It can also be highly beneficial to include a few people on the Team since they're often times the ones performing the current process and can spot potential blind spots which then can be addressed and communicated. The people who participate also become the front line ambassadors of the change during the water cooler discussions which is highly effective as people tend to trust what their peers think.

I find that sometimes it’s not the new ideas. In my situation, It’s how they have been explained with further details in the past culturally or It will take some time for the team members to trust you as a manager and believing that what you do helps them. Especially whenever a new manager joins the company. Building relationships with your team is critical.

One thing I found particularly helpful in navigating team resistance to innovation was leading by example. In my last assignment I spearheaded the introduction of a new customer feedback tool, which initially faced pushback from team members comfortable with the old system. To address this, I personally championed the tool's potential benefits and openly embraced its implementation. This not only inspired confidence in the new initiative but also set a precedent for the team to follow. Through this approach, coupled with open communication and dedicated support, we successfully transitioned towards a culture of innovation.

Show them the value they will get once they do it, both tangible and intangible, in the organisation and out of the organisation, in the professional network, apart from why it is needed in the current context!! They will understand, you also need to take a step and start learning it and using it yourself...

Continuously seek feedback from your team and be open to adapting your approach based on their input. Encourage a culture of continuous improvement and learning to foster a more innovative and risk-taking mindset over time.

Always have the spirit of this can be "Achieved", there may be many challenges but a continues and positive attitude towards the goal will always help. Keep the expectations real but no harm in trying for a more aggressive goal.

Communication Be open and let the team know why the new innovation is in place and also share the benifits you will gain as a team incase each member contributes to it .Most people dont want to just follow. Leaders, when you have something new. let the team get informed before. They can also contribute to it .value each member in a team .they will own and feel that ownership. this will easy the process during implementation.

Let us acknowledge, resisting change is a natural human reaction driven by thoughts of maintaining status quo, fear of role becoming redundant, not wanting to create additional work or not wanting to move outside our comfort zone. I have learnt few key points and continue to learn from leaders who champion change. 1. Be transparent about your own apprehensions and goals related with the change. 2. Foster an environment of mutual trust and respect by valuing your teams expertise, opinions, and contributions. 3. Cultivate psychological safety within the team where individuals feel comfortable expressing their ideas, ask questions without the fear of ridicule. 4. Empathize with your teams perspectives, concerns, and challenges.

Whenever a team member performs exceptionally in a task, find out a new way to do things, or makes the task easier to complete, we convey this to the entire team. Appreciation, congratulations, and positive vibes make the entire team appreciate the member. This new technique or strategy is shared and documented. The documentation builds a line of progression for us and new members to learn.

Yes, I will personally take the initiative to practice and implement the new idea, setting an example for others. Additionally, I will strive to inform others about why change is essential.

Sometime cause of routine work team don't get spark in new task and ideas. So have to address the benefits/ self development and profitable growth to understand the vision

Primeiramente entenderia o porque desse “medo” “receio” de tentar novas ideias e maneiras de atingir os objetivos. Após o entendimento individual e do grupo, demonstraria com exemplos práticos que hoje buscar novas maneiras de fazer as coisas, ou até mesmo mudar a maneira de fazer as coisas s?o pontos primordiais para se diferenciar da concorrência e consequentemente ocupar espa?o na “cabe?a” do seu cliente como um produto ou servi?o “diferente”. Existem vários seguimentos em que os produtos s?o muito parecidos e pequenas mudan?as já trazem grandes impactos, aqui refor?o que n?o é necessário “reinventar a roda”, é simplesmente aprimorar a abordagem, exposi??o, contato com o cliente e assim por diante.

It’s important to understand the root cause of resistance. Many a time team may be cautious because of misunderstanding or past failures. Once it’s understood and discussed this will help to set the clear direction (tailored approach to avoid repeating same mistake/s). Also it’s crucial to involve team in the decision-making process and encourage open discussion (make them more part of new ideas). Have frequent informal conversation/chat with team and encourage them to step out of their comfort zones by setting small, achievable goals that push them to try new approaches ??

We are different individuals with different potentials and approaches, thus, it is common to resist trying new ideas and taking risks. It is the leader's duty and responsibility to bring all of them on board. I would follow the following approach: 1. Show them the bigger picture so that they can connect with it. 2. Then outline the steps to achieve it. 3. Next, illustrate what the current situation lacks and how the new ideas are equipped to address those gaps. Lastly, team members are humans, not robots. We do not just copy and paste and consider the work done. Team members should also feel good about what they are doing because when they feel good, that's when the magic happens.

Easy way is Leader needs to set the path by trying the new things and team will follow it. After 4-5 such instances team members will get confidence and will not show resistance to new things. But If leader does not know the path and forcing the team to find the ways then It will not give fruitful results.

I think as a manager, one must first focus on earning the team’s trust. When they trust you, they are more likely to be open to change. One must communicate transparently and constantly involve team members in most of the decision-making processes, concerning the department Further, to reduce anxiety around change, we could use the 4-doors of change model. We divide the team into four groups & invite them to brainstorm what lies behind each door: Door One: The current situation before any change. Door Two: The current situation with the proposed change. Door Three: New possibilities after the change. Door Four: What used to be possible but won’t be anymore. Naming these aspects will help the team embrace the new idea.
