I try to talk to the people on the team individually, in a non-interrogative way, to understand the reason for the delay. I use this respectful, empathetic dialog with active listening as a last attempt to identify what is preventing deadlines from being met. And after this conversation I can make decisions with more effective actions.

Something or someone has the responsibility for this delay. Find out what it was, but ultimately the person you put in charge of this has a responsibility to communicate to you (the Leader) about the situation before it is late...so you need to teach/instruct them to assess themselves as their project is on going. When it's late, it's already past due; but almost late isn't late and you still have time.

I also try to talk about the careers of the people in the team in a dialog where the professional can seek advice to improve their performance at work and understand how the company can improve, and also take these demands to the decision-makers. I show that perseverance, hard work and dedication are not easy to have and maintain, and that what I ask of the team must also be provided by the organization.

I reinforce the results, give words of encouragement and try to improve, because discouragement and lack of commitment can affect everyone in the team, as it can generate thoughts such as: why am I doing more than this person? If it's the expected level, I can reduce the commitment to match. This can drag the team down, because one abyss can lead to another, so it's the manager's job not to let this happen.
