Start with what’s good. And, there is always something good; otherwise, why would you hire them. Then, provide specific inputs on what’s not working (problem), why it’s not right (rationale) and what will work (solution) Next, provide an example of ‘what-will-work’ looks like. Example, if someone’s new to web content writing, you might want to explain the ‘inverted pyramid’ style of writing. Finally, keep the feedback focused on the problem, not the person. Example, if you’re a grammar Nazi: Don’t - tell someone that their grammar stinks like bad breath! Do - tell them that ‘however’ is a conjunctive adverb and needs to be preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma if it’s separating two independent clauses in a sentence.

If it is a creative issue I never suggest any specific story ideas, that can crush a creative person's flow. Items that seem lacking can be addressed with positive feedback and questions. Technical writing is different. It requires skill sets that are on a professional level. Liability is costly for incorrect tech data.
