What do you do if your team members are constantly in conflict?

If constant conflict occurs among team members, that most likely means that the "The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team" (Patrick Lencioni) has not been addressed by the leader of the team. I would suggest to work with the team to learn the basics: 1. to establish the trust (open communication), 2. go through the resolution of the conflict (discussion of each of the views) 3. in order to reach commitment (reaching agreement and understanding), 4. that only then leads to accountability (taking charge and responsibility of the agreed points) 5. with which the actual results can be met.

Not all conflicts are bad, some conflicts actually improve the team as a whole. My own performance is dependent on how good other support functions are operating. We always push each other to do better and organization is all the better for it. As a leader one needs to know clearly which conflicts to resolve and which ones to foster. Two of the best ways to resolve a conflict (Mgmt Level) are: 1. Remind both parties what they want to achieve in long run. Is the conflict helping them grow professionally or personally? It is important to understand the root of the conflict, the approach that I prefer is 5 Whys root analysis, The idea is simple: ask "why" 5 times, until you get to the root cause of your conflict, in many cases we are making an effort solving the symptoms rather than dealing with the main issue! As Charles Kettering stated: "A problem well-stated is half-solved."

I think the human dimension is a bit missing here. Take them out to a nice bar for an apero followed by a restaurant for a good dinner. Try to create an “out of business Hours” climate to facilitate a conversation focussed on non business topics. This may allow an opportunity for recreate a better team climate before starting to move in the other steps which have been mentioned.

It will also be beneficial to generate innovative solutions by stepping outside of standard patterns. Keeping the process under control from end to end within the team will remind you of how important tracking is. It will preempt conflicts within the team, and instead of assumptions, it will ensure that the team focuses on data, flow, and achieving the best outcome.

Here are somethings that worked for me: 1. Listen to each individual separately with empathy in a trusted environment to genuinely understand the prospectives, goals and pain points that created the situation. 2. Help them see the bigger picture and longer term implications and how working together can help everyone and create win-win situation 3. Make them feel how having conflicts create impression of them infront of their teams that look up to them. 4. Enabling people in conflict to talk to each other more openly under pre defined guidelines to arrive at mutually beneficial outcome and establish trust

An experience I had was to offer an external mediator to help with the situation. Impartiality helped greatly to defuse the problem.
