What do you do if your team lacks motivation and you're a product manager?

Sometimes the problem lies not with the team but with leadership. Leaders must be willing to critically assess their own actions, communication, and decisions to see if they're contributing to the team's lack of motivation. Addressing leadership issues can often be the key to revitalizing a team's enthusiasm and commitment.

You can conduct a Health Check survey with the team, schedule some 1:1s meetings to understand individual perspectives better, hold retrospectives to spot group behaviors, and gather feedback from your peers like the Design Manager and Tech Manager about team members. These formats and tools will assist in pinpointing the root causes effectively.

Understanding the origin of why your team is uninspired is primary for the head of the product to find a solution for the problem the team is facing. This implies investigating in detail all the variables that create the problem - unrealistic goals, inadequate resources, personality conflicts, or detachment. Tackling these root causes helps product managers discover unique problems that their employee team faces at the micro level, thus they can develop solutions suitable for it. This may entail setting objectives, providing extra help or materials, giving out advice to settle conflicts, or coming up with activities that will boost engagement.

An unmotivated team is always an issue and understanding the root cause quickly is essential for getting things back on track. In order to get to the root cause you need to ensure that you have developed the relationships to get candid answers from the team. If you don't have the close working relationship you will struggle to get the true answers you need. Once you have the close relationships in place you won't need to go through all these laborious steps to gather the information, folk will be readily sharing. Few people come to work to do a bad job, so if things aren't right there is a problem somewhere and by focusing on the people you will be able to understand what it is! Always focus on people and relationships

- First you need to find the factors that is leading to lack of motivation. It could be leadership, unclear goals, not good resources. - Always empathise with your team to find out the challenges which is causing the lack of motivation.

The lack of motivation in the team usually stems from unclear goals or expectations, lack of recognition or reward, poor leadership, limited opportunities for growth, conflict or lack of trust, burnout, or inadequate support. As a product manager, I try to make the product vision and mission statement very clear, foster a culture of collaboration, and strive towards innovation, while also recognizing the hard work and effort the team puts in. The product manager needs to be receptive of concerns, feedback, and team sentiment on the overall team performance and satisfaction.

Try to establish a vision for the product by involving the team in strategic planning. Schedule both open and closed sessions for each quarter, and aim for regular reviews of product progress to ensure alignment with the product strategy.

The right communication tools about product vision and its value is the foundation on which other motivational efforts are made. It's crucial to call for a product that has a catchy concept to represent the product's meaning and influence. You can encourage each employee to see how their contribution is in line with the organization's objectives and leads to the direct satisfaction of the customer's needs by making them understand how their work line up with the organization's broader goals and improve the customer experience. The team members' empowerment by making them realize the contribution of their actions to achieving the common goal results in the owning and the pride of the accomplishment that fosters the internal driving force.

It is always the best thing to communicate the vision and the value to the stakeholders of the project as well as the team who really thrive to the end results. Also it should be documented and accessible to the entire team who is in the project.

Clearly articulate how each team member’s work contributes to the overall success and the impact it has on users or the business. For example, if developing a new app feature, explain how it solves a critical customer pain point and the difference it will make. This approach helps team members see the bigger picture and their role in it, fostering a sense of purpose and engagement with the project.

As a Product Manager, there are instances where the team might feel excluded from certain steps and decisions. It's important to understand how best to involve them, considering their other responsibilities. One approach could be setting focal points for specific themes, such as Epics or Features, assigning them to individual team members or pairs of developers, for more focused involvement and decision making.

Incorporating the team in the decision-making processes is equally important in the creation of a team-centered and fulfilled work environment. Through enabling of the team participants to voice their proactive approaches to decision-making, product managers cultivate a strong feeling of engagement and commitment towards the project. The reviews on social media created like listening to their opinions, addressing their concerns and the trust in their abilities and valuing their contribution boosts their morale and motivates them. When team members know that their voices are heard, and when they matter as individuals and team-wise, they tend to become more committed and involved in the project's accomplishment.

As a PM, you need to create a sense of ownership among the team members. Let them own their work and involve them in the decision making process. Encourage their input and incorporate their ideas within your projects.

For instance, when planning a new product feature, hold brainstorming sessions where all team members can contribute ideas and vote on the direction. Get the entire team when making cortical decisions about the project and get their views and ideas. It shows that they play a valuable part in the project and they are always in need for the successful completion of the project.

I strongly believe that recognition and reward are one efficient way to get your team motivated as a Product Manager. This can be done through words of appreciation, recommending your team member for a promotion, thank you messages etc. By so doing, this demonstrates that you truly value and appreciate their work and this can positively affect the team's attitude to work.

Schedule moments to celebrate achievements. Typically, I hold a monthly session for these celebrations, allowing us to share experiences, and so on. However, don't wait to have these moments only in the monthly meetings, utilize the meetings already in everyone's daily routines. Also, encourage the use of asynchronous messages in Slack channels or other messaging tools available in your company.

Recognizing and rewarding achievements is crucial for boosting team motivation. It acknowledges the hard work and dedication of team members, reinforcing positive behaviors and fostering a culture of excellence. Utilize various forms of recognition, from verbal praise to bonuses or career opportunities, tailored to match the team's preferences and values. Motivation and setting up a positive work culture in the product management team are equally based on recognizing and relevantly rewarding achievements. Publicly recognizing the efforts and successes in individuals and fulfilments in a team help the product managers ensure that people will be motivated and will dedicate themselves to the project goals. Expression of thanks, commendation, or the other kind of recognition is also a positive way to motivate teams by acknowledging their hard work and contributions this leads to boosting morale and instilling a sense of accomplishment in the team.

Even small recognitions will bring positive outcomes. Recognize their efforts time to time so that the team feels motivated even in the challenging times.

As a product manager, giving one the constructive feedback that indicates both strongpoints and a workplace that is rich with learning opportunities helps an employee to learn and grow. Humans are social animals, humans love being social and there is a small joy in connected with people around you and appreciated by them. Organizing social activities and not talking about work for some instances makes them feel special. They will do best during office hours if they are looking forward to activities like this. It makes them inclusive in organizations and meeting with all stack holders of the project fosters creativity and innovative ideas while socializing. The reason for feeling demotivated may vary from person to person, so having an open dialogue with individual team members to understand their POV is important. Also, a lot of the time recognizing a person's effort and making them feel important is critical. Every member of a team should feel they are the foundation and a level of ownership for their work must be granted.

While addressing team motivation is crucial, it's equally important to recognize that sustained success isn't solely reliant on motivation alone. Rather than solely focusing on boosting motivation, consider fostering an environment that encourages dedication, perseverance, and a strong work ethic. By instilling a culture of consistency and persistence, your team will not only stay motivated but also develop the resilience needed to overcome challenges and drive long-term success.
