What do you do if your team is facing conflicts in Business Operations?

A few years back, I saw a conflict escalate between one of my direct reports and a colleague from another department. The two were worlds apart in their personality and communication styles, with an undeniable culture clash adding a layer of complexity to the situation. Despite my encouragement they couldn't find a solution so I stepped in, sat the two together and sought to get to the root cause. This was magical. While leaving space for emotions: my direct report felt our colleague was being intrusive while the other felt she was treated unjustly when all she wanted to do was gain efficiency, by asking "why" repeatedly, we were able to get to the root and a compromise was found, setting up a new process which put this conflict to rest.

When facing conflicts in business operations, it's crucial to address them promptly and effectively. First, encourage open communication to understand the root causes. Then, facilitate constructive dialogue to find common ground and potential solutions. Encourage compromise and collaboration to reach agreements beneficial for all parties involved. Implement clear protocols for conflict resolution and establish a culture of respect and understanding within the team. Regularly reassess operations to prevent future conflicts and foster a positive working environment.

First action should be to clarify the source of conflict. If possible have all discussions take place in a safe and private area. Listen and let everyone share their own views and points. Investigate the situation. Agree on best solutions and the responsibilities each person bears in the resolution. Decide preventive strategies for future occurrences.

Instead of giving straight directions to your team, I believe that we have to listen to our team with empathy. Which means feeling their challenges or state of mind with them. So that they can open up and we can resolve it.

Conflict in the workplace, whether related to business operations or any other area, is something we all hope to avoid. However, teams always working in tune and harmony exist only in manuals and fantasy genre books. We, like life itself, are diverse and complex. Our views on work ethics, goals, and outcomes may differ. Moreover, we all respond to feedback, interactions with others, and clashes of interest in various ways. To proceed and succeed, the collective "we" should take precedence over the individual "I"; the benefit of the company must come before personal ambitions. Sometimes, we must acknowledge that certain individuals do not mesh well together; thus, restructuring a team can sometimes be the best solution for the greater good.
