I have always said it's amazing what you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit. I find if you have an underpreforming team it's either they are unsure or don't know how to effectively make the change to expected performance. Support, direction and help by being a committed partner may be the way to meet expectations. The most effective motivator is to make the team successful. As they make the transition praise and support will drive them to continue on that path. Seldom do we find the team is not qualified, they just need some support and leadership.

Another way to motivate and inspire your team is to provide them with constructive feedback and recognition. Feedback helps your team learn from their mistakes, improve their skills, and grow their confidence. Recognition helps your team feel appreciated, valued, and respected. I like to remind myself and my teams of why we all chose our career. For most of us we enjoy serving clients deeply. We all need to pause our busy lives once is a while to remind ourselves of this. I find that when I take such a moment it re-fuels my passions to serve. Sharing my own process to refresh with my teams helps my team do the same.

We have found success in taking advantage of the varied skills within our department to foster collaboration. Even though each member has their own accounts, we've identified key specialty areas where we can leverage those skills across our programs regardless of account ownership. This provides opportunities to share best practices across accounts, allows team members to hone their skills with multiple experiences and offers a platform to work together with peers that might not otherwise exist. In this case motivation and inspiration comes from collaborating with direct team members to learn about other accounts and be recognized for core skills more broadly in the organization.

Personally, when the grind has been wearing on my team's motivation, what I have found helps is grounding ourselves on our mission and purpose for being in business. By relating real-world impact that genuinely helps businesses become less risky, safer, more productive, more profitable, and or more sustainable, you can often re-inspire your team in this manner. Everyone wants to feel that what they spend their time doing makes a difference and has a purpose for good in some way, shape, or form. A great way to break the ice is through one of your very own stories that shares how you (the leader) connect to that mission. It's your excitement and energy that can rekindle the flame. Show them how stoked you are and watch what follows.
