It's us, hey, we're the problem it's us. Figuring out how to calculate apple sales and angles is dull stuff. Give students actual problems to solve or better yet, help them to solve their own, local or global. Not sure how? Try the SDG's. Or ask students what they want to change about the world. Guaranteed you'll be able to teach all your content lessons through their projects, and you'll get an avalanche of student critical thinking going.

In a world where most K-12 students are spending most of their time at home glued to a phone or tablet, collaboration is so very important. Students can lack "people skills" because of this and with everything coming mostly with ease there is little critical thinking happening outside the classroom. Creating intentional moments and intentionally grouping students is essential to developing critical thinking and collaboration skills. Watching opportunities where students an use their differing schema to solve a problem is so fulfilling because it literally makes lightbulbs and "aha" moments come to life.

First - and most important - students DO NOT lack critical thinking and problem solving skills. That’s a deficit mindset. The key to success is that we educators need to believe all students can think critically and problem solve. Some are “better” or “more skilled” than others. However, every child has the ability and capability to think critically and problem solve. Educators need to have that collective efficacy. We need guide and support students to develop, demonstrate, and deepen the skills they have to think critically and problem solve. Don’t just have them answer. Guide and support them to explain or justify how, why, what if, or what else. Teach and learn through inquiry and by questioning with good questions.

We live in a society that does not encourage questions. There is no purpose in critical-thinking when we have trained/taught people to do as I do. Then, when someone does ask a question many times the person doesn't know the answer or the person believes their authority is being questioned.
