What do you do if your sales management role is not paying enough?

It is extremely important to set goals, chart your progress on a regular basis, this could be quarterly or monthly. I prefer monthly because it requires me to be honest with myself regarding strengths and weaknesses; and how they are manifested through my behavior, relationships, and ultimately my performance. When we look at performance metrics, they are influenced to some extent by external influences, i.e weather, holidays, economic concerns. However we tend to have little or no control over those external influences; so you want to reflect introspectively on your contributions to the teams overall performance as that is the area you can impact the greatest.

First I pull plenty of data from various resources, to demonstrate where we are in the competitive landscape when it comes to pay. Second, I will show them a few resumes of candidates in the existing range. Ensure they are clear that they will have to sacrifice something if they don't have the budget to be competitive when hiring proven sales talent. Third, I would question their ability to ramp someone to success if we lower the requirements in accordance with budget. How costly will it be to hire for less and spend x more months training and ramping before yielding revenue. This typically results in a lowering of the role or an increase in budget.

Then negotiate with the employer in a cordial manner. No employer will let go of a higher achiever easily today. Review your own performance. Are you good enough? Can you improve further? Can you do more things? Look for job opportunities in your Market. If you get it then your pay will increase automatically. If you need more money then it doesn't just need to come from your current. Do a side hustle which does not conflict with your current role.

There is 'No Pitch'. The question is rather, are you qualified or not? As a Sales Manager, does your performance warrant more money than you're getting? Has your production increased the profitability of the company in your department? Has your sales team improved? If my employer feels we are underperforming, the question I'd ask is ... "What numbers are you looking for us to produce?" Let's work our an incremental bonus program on top of my current Pay Plan that me and my team can work toward? Not forever a sales manager is on top or bottom, so there are always blues and pinks in sales. My posture is to approach top management with a written Pay Plan, totally different in structure that what they're paying now. It is important that they see your number before you ask for their number. Assuming they value you as an employee and don't want to lose you. Do Not Threaten to Go Elsewhere! "Boss, here's our current production for me and my sales team. I believe we can do this number in unit sales and increased profitability. Here's my plan to get us to that level. If we do that I want to change compensation to a lower guaranteed salary and a higher commission with bonuses at various increased levels. Whenever I hired a new manager, even if I had to give them a guarantee, they had a pay plan based on what I expected and sales history. The cavate was a 90 day review when the guarantee ended to review and adjust.

See in a real world its always good to follow up and own up to your ask because you need the money and not your boss. No-one is gonna come to you upfrontly, if the negotiation isn’t going the way it was decided do not sit on it and wait for someone to come to you and talk about it rather take quick action and send timely reminders along with your progress at the same time.

If somebody or something is holding you back then address that or leave If you have freedom of activity, you have a good product and a good system and you do not have a profitable bottom line and you are not making enough money… look deep into yourself to figure out if you deserve more money
