In most cases, you will literally be one out of 100 resumes that the screener is going to glance at. If 99 of them feature compelling Highlights and you bring up failures, you might not get the chance to go on to the next step- even if you are the best candidate. Employers also want to get the impression that you are moving ahead, thinking about value you can offer and not dwelling on failures. They are great lessons but I would not spend a lot of time explaining them on a resume. Do be very prepared to honestly explain the gaps however.

I have a bit of a different take on this. It's ok to reframe failures and talk about the positives of learning through it or how ending up in a different direction was better. I wouldn't do it every time because it may come off as justification. Example, I booked the hotel for my leader but it's ok because it was a better hotel. Sometimes we just learn not to ever do "that" again or figured out we were not in the right space for our career plan. So, reframe yes, but if there is another example that just helped you move forward, that's ok too.
