What do you do if your professional network lacks diversity and inclusivity?

One of the best way to add diversity of thought to your network is to hang out in different industries and networks. The key is self awareness that this might be a limiting factor and then being open to welcoming new people in.

In addition to assessing demographic and professional backgrounds, consider evaluating the geographical distribution of your contacts. Diversity can also encompass cultural perspectives and experiences influenced by different regions or countries. Moreover, examine the range of industries and sectors represented in your network. Engaging with individuals from varied fields can bring unique insights and opportunities for collaboration. Remember, fostering diversity isn't just a checklist; it's an ongoing commitment to inclusivity and broadening perspectives.

Sit and plan which communities you luck, or if it is global brand, which culture is missing. Then, start with looking for communities in the social media. From there tou can get ideas where to look.

You absolutely need to widen your network and ensure you are engaging with a mix of people/professionals who are going to give you different perspectives and views. Don't just mix with "Yes" people or people that live and think like you. Mix and network with people that challenge you and make you think differently, this is how you grow as a person.

Many will experience affinity bias. It’s important to cast a wide net and expand your reach and knowledge on other demographics, connect with others who are not from the same demographic or background etc. Education is key. Diversity leads to more creativity and stronger cultures within businesses. Embrace diversity in all its forms

To broaden your professional network inclusively: Seek Diverse Events: Attend gatherings that attract a varied demographic, differing from your usual circles. Look for events in other industries or interest groups. Join New Organizations: Become part of organizations that foster diversity. This could involve groups outside your professional sphere that share different perspectives and experiences. Intentional Networking: Aim to connect with individuals who differ not just in appearance but also in background, profession, and worldview. Embrace Various Viewpoints: Actively engaging with a diverse range of people enhances your understanding and opens up new collaborative opportunities.

As a personal branding coach, I’ve actually found that the lack of diversity and inclusivity in one’s professional network can often be due to the “perception” of being unapproachable (for several different reasons). A quick solution can often be to go back to one’s brand to ask and answer the question of, “Does my brand value or include openness, transparency, and/or curiosity?” These elements are trademarks of individuals who welcome difference and value understanding. Yes - your personal brand should speak to your aspirations but it should also speak to who you are, and the values have and hope to reflect. We often attract what we are, so if you’re looking for diversity and inclusivity, BE open, understanding, and inclusive!

Expanding your network can also involve exploring online communities and forums related to your interests. Engaging in discussions, sharing insights, and connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds can foster meaningful relationships. Additionally, consider participating in mentorship programs or volunteering opportunities that expose you to different perspectives and challenges. Building a global network through platforms like LinkedIn or professional associations can further broaden your horizons and provide access to a wide range of expertise. Embracing continuous learning and curiosity about different cultures, industries, and disciplines will enhance your professional growth and adaptability in today's interconnected world.

Expand your network by attending events outside your usual circles. Intentionally connect with people who offer diverse perspectives and experiences. This enriches professional interactions and promotes collaboration and learning.

My professional network must include people I can learn from, people I can debate with, and people who are happy to learn from me.

Don’t be drilling too much about “diversity” - if you want to develop a personal brand strategically that helps you achieve career / business goals: quantity isn’t as important as quality. It comes to your goals to define and set your audience. Don’t be afraid if your audience is perhaps just one person or a small group of people. You don’t need to win the world to build a brand

More mistakes have been made in trying to unnaturally increase diversity ratios. That's the truth. And it's not just in diversity. Just remember to surround yourself with people who are better than you. And of course, be a better version everyday - so they have a reason to be near you.

Diversity and inclusivity can be implemented broadly. Skills and values may be the priority area for a team. It will be interesting how to mix these four parameters viz.skills,values, diversity and inclusivity.
