Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and initiate conversations with new contacts to broaden your network.

If your professional network is growing at the pace of a dial-up internet connection, it’s time for a reboot. First, do a goal check: Why do you want to network, with whom, and how many people per month? Identifying what you’re actually looking for—be it a wise Yoda mentor or a biz whiz partner—can help sharpen your networking ninja skills. Next up, change the game. If you’re hitting the same walls, maybe it’s time to explore new arenas. Think webinars, industry forums, or even a pottery class if that’s where your peeps hang. And remember, networking is like planting seeds. Sometimes, you need to water them with more than just business cards.

I found a Squiggly careers podcast on increasing visibility really useful on this topic. My main takeaway was to find out where my ‘target audience’ hangs out and go there! I was trying to get potential clients to join me on webinars and workshops when in fact what has been much more effective is to go to them. Find out what associations they’re part of or where they meet together (virtually or online) and seek an opportunity to join them. People are busy but I’ve found they will carve time if you go to them.

Reach out and start a conversation with people outside of your network that may be in different sectors. Be curious, ask questions and be respectful.

This is something I’ve thought a lot about recently. Now we work in a more hybrid manner, I’ve found I’m not inside my clients buildings as much any more. This means I don’t have those off the cuff conversations with leaders that lead to potential collaboration or partnership. I don’t hear about the challenges and opportunities my clients are facing so miss opportunities to position myself in a way I can help. This year, I’ve scheduled business development check ins which are non agenda, informal chats over a coffee. This approach has enabled me to be closer to what’s happening in my clients businesses and also then enabled me to learn more about how I might help.

You can do these things to nurture the relationship. 1. Wish them on their special days. 2. Get excited about their achievements and congratulate them. 3. Contribute when they need help. 4. Be their biggest cheerleader. There are many other ways to nurture the relationship.

I'd regularly engage with contacts through meaningful conversations, offering support, and showing genuine interest in their endeavors. By attending industry events or joining relevant online forums, I can stay updated and contribute knowledge. Additionally, I'd leverage social media platforms to share insights and connect with peers. Cultivating strong bonds within my current network ensures mutual trust and opens doors to potential opportunities in the future.

Linked in is an incredible tool to build a network. A network isn’t just the highest number of connections. It’s about quality connections. For me, the best way to build connections virtually is to position myself somewhere to meet people first (virtually or face to face) and then use Linked In to strengthen that connection. I always follow up a meeting with a connection and personal message reminding the person where we met. If I receive a connection request that then immediately sends a sales message, I disconnect. I want to get to know someone (know like and trust) before I’d be interested in doing business with them!

First, I'd identify relevant platforms such as LinkedIn, industry forums, or specialized groups. Then, I'd actively engage by sharing insights, commenting on others' posts, and connecting with professionals in my field. Additionally, I'd seek out virtual networking events and webinars to expand my knowledge and connections. Consistent participation and thoughtful interactions can help me build meaningful relationships and grow my professional network despite limitations.

Most networkers fail to understand the importance of quality time that needs to be invested with people to build trust and bond. You prioritise understanding fellow networkers' asks and make a sincere effort to support building bonds. Make a list of people you want to network with, identify the kind of networking forums these individuals spend time with, and make a conscious effort to attend and experience a few of these networking events, comprehend their culture, do's, don'ts, protocols, support system, etc. Pick and choose suitable options to explore the possibility of becoming a member. Spend Quality time, and evaluate opportunities to take up voluntary roles that help you build credibility and bond to fast-track your networking journey

Connect with those whose work interests you. Listen: There is scarcity of people who are genuinely interested in listening to others. People will remember you if they felt heard, and they are likely to connect /reconnect with you if their experience of interacting with you was positively remembered.

Join industry groups, events, get affiliated to networking groups or a member of such groups. This will allow you to meet people outside your company who are relevant to your profession or industry.

Meet real people! Networking is not just about being online, you need to meet people in real life. Join networking groups, go for events, go for seminars and sessions organised by groups. Introduce yourself, be confident and friendly and talk to as many people as you can. Every person knows other people and will help you get introduced to them as well.

Engage in networking events, join relevant groups, and connect on social media. Help others, stay in touch, and be open to new opportunities. Attend workshops and alumni events, and be proactive in building relationships.

I have reached out tirelessly to colleagues in the healthcare arena on initiatives I thought would provoke great interest. However, only some respond out of curiosity and actually, that’s OK.
