Most the times the Projects and deliveries are delayed because of some secondary factors which leaders and team managers generally tend to loose focus on considering this as a basic hygiene which is generally not followed 1- Closure on detailed Scope of delivery 2- Proactive Assessment of required approvals from Senior leaders internally or from customer side 3- Taking Enough Buffers in estimations and planning to mitigate the unplanned risks. These factors are generally avoided by the Project or Program leaders and these factors if handled proactively can definitely help in timely executions of Deliveries

Often the delay in projects happen due to delay in communication. I have seen people wait for 2-3 business days just to get a signoff from an important business stakeholder. Therefore, it is very important to simplify the entire process so that this can be avoided.

From a product management perspective, you've already focused on customer and business outcomes, what you are discovering is either that they are no longer good bets (cost too much, take too long), or that you need to update the timing of your releases / experiments to match the reality of how long it is taking. The team is already working on the next most important things. You are updating your approach to the market based on reality, you are not task-managing the team. Product management and project management are different jobs.

It's important to structure workloads with minimal dependencies to reduce the time required to adjust them to new scopes. To achieve this, I always ensure that every feature I introduce encapsulates epics that include a single functionality and span a maximum of three sprints. This approach allows for easy reprioritization of entire epics without wasting time adjusting their scope. It also helps to mitigate the negative impact on morale that can be caused by deprioritization, simplifies communication with stakeholders, and reduces the time required for rescoping implementation.

One thing I'll call out here is, falling behind schedule is a project oriented task. It really depends on the company's structure how this would be communicated. For example; if there's a program manager, they will be doing all of this and not the product manager. The product manager may be communicating, re-aligning, and things of that nature. If there isn't a program manager and it's up to the product manager to do both product and project, then this is more applicable.
