What do you do if your problem-solving skills as a leader need a technological boost?

Embracing technology is key but learning to apply it in the right domain is even more important. My domain background in Smart cities, smart buildings, smart energy management etc required me to learn IoT, Data Analytics, and now AI and understanding these technologies even on a high level will be a real boost to your problem solving skills. I picked up IoT skills way back in 2014 when this was still nascent and then later on realized that some of these tech are inter-related and started learning online courses on Data science and now looking to apply AI. Again, just to emphasise, understanding how you apply tech skills to the domain is very important.

I am an “older” leader (who is old anymore?) with 40 years or so in the world of adulthood and professional work. Real leadership did not become part of me until I opened my business of physical therapy in 1997 (27 years ago). Past experiences, lessons learned, a good brain God gave me, and a host of other tangible and intangible “pieces” helped me succeed in my business (16 offices, 100 or so employees). I’m not too old to embrace the newness of everything thrown at me if it helps with the processes and the bottom line. AI documentation, wearable medical devices, growing social media options, are plentiful, valuable, helpful, wonderful and important to every business big and small. Embrace change. Work hard. Be diligent! Enjoy the ride!!

I am currently going through this myself- I'm actually having fun doing it! I am learning to try automate parts of my practice, implement systems. By staying in touch with tech you can keep your work relevant and enhance your service delivery.

With a good understanding of technology needs, we can direct efforts and investments more efficiently, optimizing the benefits of technology in overcoming the challenges we face.

Ultimately the goal of a leader is to work in best interests of all the stakeholders, so it will be a great approach to understand how the adoption of technology will impact lives of each stakeholder and never forget the long term goal of the organization while doing it. Start by identifying pain points after interacting with stakeholders and then working on the proposed solution for the same and finally monitoring the changes implemented

One thing that helped me throughout my career is the principle of "learning over knowing". Never settle with the knowledge because as the products and managers evolve with time, technologies evolve with a 2x speed. Attend workshops, be part of the online workshops conducted by different forums. They provide a wide platform for enhancing the domain and skillset that one holds.

In addition, updating knowledge about technology also allows a person to better overcome new challenges, as well as increasing creativity and flexibility in finding solutions. Thus, continuous technological learning plays a key role in ensuring that we can make maximum use of technology to solve problems effectively and efficiently.

Inclusive leader will tap into the knowledge and experience of their team and invite input. The need for boosting one’s technological skills might be a great opportunity to engage younger digitally native team members and invite them to mentor and guide others.

Working with a much younger team, I have learned that my skills are based on experience that is, in many respects, based on outdated situations. Much of my career was in analog whereas my team has grown up surrounded by digital solutions to problems.

The importance of implementing wise use of technology is to ensure that technology is used effectively and efficiently in solve problems without causing negative impacts. With a wise approach, we can minimize the risk of failure, maximize the benefits of technology and ensure that solutions implemented match the needs and goals to be achieved.

Although we view the time we put into learning and using technology as valuable, it isn’t always easy to assess if the technology is going to be worth the investment. I think we’ve all been in the situation where we jumped in, invested time and money only to discover that the technology did not do the job we expected it to. It’s worth it to take the time to choose the right platforms and make certain they offer the customer support needed. Pull together an ad hoc team to review and make recommendations and ask others about their experiences with the technology. The time put in on the front end is worth it.

Once a solution has been put in place you need to make sure to monitor the performance and the outcome. Is this what you were expecting? Is this performing during x amount of time? Can this be replicated elsewhere?

Create a long-term technology strategy aligned with your overall business goals. This will help you identify the most appropriate tools and ensure they are effectively integrated into your workflows. Make sure you continuously evaluate the effectiveness of your technology solutions. As your business evolves and new challenges emerge, adapt your approach and invest in new technologies that can provide further support.

Be brave enough to try something new. Don't be afraid of technology, just because haven't used it yet. A few years ago, you didn't know what a computer was, and then you started using it. Later, you got to use smartphones, and now you're using it daily. Use that same approach and be as curious as a child about new tech. You won't break the internet or your company by trying new tech.

Don’t forget to consider both corrective and preventive actions. Don’t just “bandaid” a solution - find the root cause to prevent future problems. And when finding root cause, look wide and deep. The classic “ask why five times” can help. Problems are often systemic, not random.

Like anything else where we need to grow and learn, take a single concrete step. That could be as simple as getting into the software your company uses to try to learn a new feature. It could be addressing a question you already have about tech you use, but actually take the time to investigate and solve the problem. Sometimes our best learning happens with a single step, growing in confidence, and letting that step take you the next one(s).
