The first and foremost thing to do is to inform the management or if you are at a senior level then communicate to the client about the delay. Post which work on the solution to expedite the process so as to minimise the delay. Once we are through all this, identify the reason that lead to such a scenario and eliminate the same for future tasks.

In my leadership experience in plant operations, impossible deadlines were common due to inefficiencies in the supply chain, lack of transparent communication channels, inadequate automation, and unclear role responsibilities. Ignoring data analytics of KPIs exacerbated the challenges. However, past performance taught valuable lessons. By setting up effective production timelines aligned with KPIs, resources, maintenance, and buffer periods, along with stringent safety discipline and transparent communication, we overcame obstacles. Clear role responsibilities, with a focus on the who, what, why, when, and how, streamlined operations. Emphasizing teamwork and being a team player were pivotal in our success.

The entire system needs to be reviewed. Not only the operations and processes in the plant but all activities in the supply chain. Is it equipment downtime? Waiting for parts? Manpower shortages?
