Having a work life balance is an essential element to success and happiness. Work is important and so is family. In fact, a happy personal life could yield better results professionally for an individual. It is very important to take short breaks, get recharged and rejuvenated every few weeks to maintain work life equilibrium. For me personally, I missed quite a bit of the growing up days of my kid due to travel, which I now repent. If a company's culture or your work profile demands you to spend days, months and weeks away from family and taking a toll on you mentally and physically, it's perhaps time to rethink if you are at the right place or not. It's about choosing your priorities in life.

While it’s important to set boundaries with your boss and employer, what is more important is to set boundaries with yourself too. Most often than not we “allow” for work to take over our lives because of how much attention and importance we give it. Work becomes our identity and slowly takes over our lives and then it is too late. So building a good balance between being sincere at work and also being sincere about your self worth and care is to the first step. This issue of imbalance cannot be blamed or solved only by the employer or from an external source. Work needs to happen both internally and in our environment
