What do you do if your passion for the industry isn't coming across in interviews?

When first interviewing for a role which would see me working with accountants, this was something I thought hard about. It isn't the easiest profession to speak about enthusiastically! For me, the key was to identify topics I was passionate about (in my case, sustainability, technology and social mobility). From here, I was able to describe how the role, and accountancy profession would be able to support the key issues that motivated me with genuine passion and enthusiasm. My recommendation would be to reflect on what motivates you personally, and then how the role you are applying for will see you working towards these goals.

If you are not able to convey your passion for the industry during interviews, there are a few things you can try. First, make sure you are doing your research and are well-informed about the company and the industry. This will give you more confidence and help you speak more fluently about your interests. You can also try to incorporate personal anecdotes or stories that illustrate your passion. Finally, practice your interview responses with a friend or family member to get feedback and make adjustments as needed. Remember that passion is not just about enthusiasm, but also about a deep understanding and commitment to the work.

A common issue in interviews is trying too hard to sound clever through overly complicated (unnecessary) language. Someone who understands a topic clearly should be able to explain it in a way which anyone can understand regardless of their professional background. Once you have identified the parts of a profession you are passionate about, my recommendation would be to ask the interviewer if this is a passion they share. If so, you have the opportunity to demonstrate a depth of knowledge through more specific examples/ terminology. If it is an area they are less familiar with, showcase your passion through confidently explaining it to them, why you are passionate about it, and the significance it has in the profession.

If you are truly passionate about your subject, your body language will reflect that. Get feedback from other people when you practise what you'll talk about. Artificially forcing your body into certain postures in the belief that you will look open or assertive can backfire. Your body language must match what you say and how you say it or your credibility will be impacted. And all of your body and your facial expressions need to be giving the same message as each other, otherwise, again you'll appear insincere. The easiest way to get your body language right is to believe what you are saying with all your heart.

body language is very interesting....it has the power to create impression either good or bad. you you need to learn the body language. maintain eye contact, sit up straight....these non verbal cues can communicate the sincerity of your words. we need to be mindful of nervousness which can reduce the effect of our communication.

Your body language speaks a lot about you and your interest in people. Make eye contact, stay in a straight posture, make few gestures with your hands and be careful not to show nervousness.

Active listening is key to any interview. One trick which has helped me is repeating a question back to the interviewer (in slightly different words) at the start of your answer. Not only does it give you time to reflect on what you want to say, but it shows you have listened to the question and haven't just jumped to the next skill/ story you want to make them aware of. Additionally, if sharing an example relating to a question, when relevant, don't be afraid to link these back to one from earlier in the interview. We all can freeze under pressure but if you think of something relevant as part of a later question, don't be afraid to say "this also relates to your earlier question about..." This is a great demonstration of active listening

as we communicate, we should develop the practice of listening also...which is as important as talking. because by listening we create an impression that we are ready to listen to the other side also that we are open to any kind of discussion regarding the subject.

Active listening can show your passion just as effectively as speaking. Show your real interest in your interview, listen carefully to the questions asked and respond with energy. Be 100% present in that moment, fully focused on your interview

Last but not least, during the interview, share your research findings, and ask about those topics you are not clear about.

the follow up is very important part as it shows the interviewer that you are interested in the job. that your passions are real for the job and not fake. it shows the excitement of yours towards towards your passion.

In addition to the above strategies, consider seeking feedback from trusted peers or mentors. They can offer valuable insights into how your passion comes across in interviews. Practice mock interviews to hone your communication skills and build confidence. Remember, passion is contagious—when you authentically express your enthusiasm for sales and marketing, others can't help but take notice.

Say something that makes you look knowledgeable ("most people do it like this, however there are ways to..."), throw in a fact about the future of the industry ("in 10 years, the competition will still be doing XYZ, unless they..."), talk about a goal ("I learnt some stuff pretty quickly on my own and want to teach others do the same"). Introverts have subdued body language & manner of speaking, which is construed as lack of passion. So, deliver end result of passion instead - subject matter expertise, vision & goal setting. Note - not all interviewers mark passion as a criterion. Zeal may work against you during a job offer discussion.
