What do you do if your operational planning fails and you need to stay positive and motivated?

If your operational plan fails..... I hope that staying positive and motivated isn't really in question. With the proper expectation management, a level of failure should already be taken into consideration. Perfect world, plans B or C should be immediately set into motion. In the event all alternate plans fail I would suggest you take a moment to reevaluate the situation. It is probably because you didn’t take something into consideration initially. Repeat step one with new information, adjust as needed knowing you will find a solution because you did initially. Take solace in that you and your team have probably learned a valuable lesson.

Self-care: Prioritize mental and physical well-being to maintain energy and resilience. Vision: Keep sight of long-term goals to stay motivated through temporary setbacks. Learning: View failures as opportunities for growth and commit to continuous improvement.

Concordo, e acrescento que ao se deparar com falhas operacionais é preciso análise fria usando inteligência emocional e racionalidade, mantendo o limiar de emo??es e a mente focada na solu??o, se esta houver, e se n?o houver, abstrair o que houve como aprendizado e oportunidade de aperfei?oamento do processo, da equipe, do produto e o auto aperfei?oamento. Leve em conta que o olhar positivo é um hábito que pode ser desenvolvido, treinado com o cotidiano e boa prática de encontrar solu??es e evolu??o no dia-a-dia, e a motiva??o é olhar para o que pode ser construído, pode vir a ser, e pra imagem do futuro que alcan?ará.

The amount of reality assesment one can make is highly dependent on the time frame one has. If it is a few seconds, sometimes the only option is to press forward with even more force. Normally reasesssing the objective needs to be completely detached from one self and only be evaluated by the facts. Identifying the reasons for the faliure to reach the objective usually benefits from being evaluated by someone from the outside, who might see the failure more clearly.

Operational changes should be communicated with clear documentation and a "Where is the beef section". Unforunately long communications usually are prone to be unintentionally disreagarded because of the enormous work loads of people. PowerPoint should be avoided at all cost for comunication of changes. People tend to over simplify everything in PPT to make the presentation flow nicely.

In the Finnish Army we have an expression that roughly translates to: "A pessimist is never dissapointed". There is actually some truth to this ,although it might seem a bit negative. Ultra positivity is usually forced and can lead to unrealistic belief in capabilityies that do not exist. I have seen numerous cases where this "infectous positivity" has caused more damage both materially and financially than a more cautious and maybe more negative approach.

Focus on Solutions can be very helpful. Shifting the focus to find solutions and taking proactive steps to address the issue at hand. Brainstorm with team members to generate creative ideas and strategies for overcoming challenges and achieving success.

I honestly acknowledge that I fail to understand the topic in its entirety. Having worked for 16 long years in one of the finest armed forces in the world, I’ve been groomed in a member that presumes the following points as key tenets to any plan of action:- 1. No plan is absolute or fool proof. That means every plan will have inherent risks, failure points, roadblocks and attrition associated with it. 2. A good plan executed in time is far superior to an excellent plan executed late. 3. In the planning phase one must identify and cater for all critical/fatal failure points, choke points, points of no return, dead man’s curves, etc. If the above tenets are met, there is no reason that a plan should fail. Rest are simply set backs.

While every plans carries inherent risks and uncertainties, this doesn't mean that planning is futile. Instead, it underscores the importance of proactive risk management, continuous monitoring and adoption, and resilience in the face of challenges. Effective planning involves anticipating potential risks like incomplete information or human factors or complexity or dynamic environment etc and developing contingency plans to mitigate them.
