Additionally, I engage in role-playing scenarios to improve and become more aware of my body language in different settings.

OK. The only place non-verbal cues work is in a SEAL Team where the people have practiced together for months to agree on what the cues are. Your non-verbal cues will never effectively convey your leadership skills to anyone. Instead, talk to your supervisor and explain what you want and ask how you can get there. Demonstrate your leadership skills by actually leading. Learn about people in general. Be strictly honest, and consistent in decision making processes. Support your people and help them succeed. Most importantly, communicate with the people you are leading. Keep in mind that effective leadership is hard and most people are terrible at it. Those that are successful, though, always have excellent verbal communication skills.

While many of us feel that their non verbal queues are effective, fact is far from truth. A lot of us do not understand or use little queues in body language effectively. Many a times I have seen people completely unaware of how to use posture, eye contact, voice modulation etc effectively. We often are not aware we are using them but they can distract the audience and provide a strong cue that something is not aligned between your words and the way the message is received.

Being aware of what your mannerisms in tone and pace are and practicing messages ahead if you know that you fall into some cues that are working against you are important ways to lower your stress in a discussion and be able to present your best when it means the most.

It’s easy to lose our awareness of tones especially via email/ text so I’ve found that when having important conversations, picking up the phone or even sending a voice note is so much for authentic and effective.

When asked a question directly, give yourself 1-2 seconds of pause before starting your response. It may feel really long but it gives you time to finalize how you will answer and shows you haven't already planned a response before the other finishes speaking.

It is important to respond to a situation quickly and reassure the team that as a leader, you are aware and have a way of determining the best approach. We often deal with situations in the workplace and in business where we don't have solutions. I think as a leader the most important quality is being able to assume responsibility and not avoid getting ahead of something that could be a problem.
