What do you do if your nonprofit organization needs to mentor and develop the next generation of leaders?

Identifying future leaders is something that every successful organization must do continuously. This holds true for the next generation of leaders as well. One good approach that great nonprofits do is establish an associates or auxiliary board. This gives the organization a good way to see those interested in the mission of the organization and who bring energy and passion to the organization. Also, don't have rigid rules in place that don't really consider younger participants for senior leadership.

To develop the next generation of leaders in a nonprofit organization, strategies include establishing a mentorship program, offering leadership development opportunities, fostering a culture of learning and growth, encouraging cross-generational collaboration, and partnering with external organizations and mentors for additional support. These strategies aim to ensure the organization's long-term success and sustainability.

If the organization's purpose is to develop the next leaders, all its activity must be structured around that goal. A Global Strategic Plan must be defined with its stakeholders. This Plan must define not only the strategy but the actions in the short, medium and long term. This plan must have clear KPIs and be continually reviewed and adapted to realities.

To mentor and develop the next generation of leaders in a nonprofit organization, it's essential to establish structured mentorship programs, provide opportunities for hands-on experience and skill development, and foster a culture of continuous learning and growth. This can involve pairing emerging leaders with experienced mentors, offering leadership training workshops, internships, and leadership development programs tailored to the organization's mission and values. Additionally, creating pathways for advancement and recognizing and celebrating achievements can help inspire and motivate future leaders to excel and make a meaningful impact within the organization and the community it serves.

A key limiting factor in identifying the best nonprofit leadership is our general blindness to employee motivations and needs, and how these met or unmet needs translate into institutional behavior. Most executive teams we work with utilize performance reviews, feedback surveys, and recognition award voting to try and identify leaders. But these tools aren't designed to identify the motivations that drive individual employee behavior or team behavior. Leaders are driven by the need for control, social engagement, variety, and non/conformity to varying degrees. These needs must be aligned with the values and needs of their team. Uncovering what drives leaders requires a comprehensive discipline using personality and cognitive insights.

The Global Strategic Plan that we will develop must contemplate specific "end to end" action plans to identify, accompany, train and transfer talent and knowledge. We would build an agile, flexible, open and continuously transforming organization based on our know-how and leadership culture.

In my experience, mentoring and developing the next generation of leaders needs to be a top priority. One effective strategy is giving feedback and recognition. For instance, I vividly remember a recent situation where one of our young team members took the initiative to spearhead a new youth services project. After its successful implementation, I made sure to provide specific and constructive feedback on their leadership skills, highlighting their strengths and areas for growth. Additionally, I publicly recognized their contributions during our team meetings, praising their dedication and innovation. This feedback and recognition not only motivated the individual but also inspired other emerging leaders to step up and contribute.

While the value of feedback and recognition in developing future leaders is important, here are some additional viewpoints and comments that might improve the success of this approach:?Tailor feedback to individual needs, promote two-way communication, link feedback to development goals, balance positive and constructive feedback, and implement feedback mechanisms. By embracing these new viewpoints and critiques, the method of providing feedback and recognition to future leaders may become more thorough, powerful, and favourable to supporting the growth and potential of rising leaders within an organization.

Training never ends, is in continuous evolution and transformation, adapting to the new challenges that each of them will face. We must be flexible and let them acquire experiences, knowledge, and make mistakes in what they do so that they acquire new skills that transform their profile.

It is important to present challenges to potential young leaders and push them put of their comfort zone. It is also important to provide them ongoing support during this process while also giving them a safe space to learn, fail and grow as a person and as a leader. Throwing someone into a situation that leaves them to sink or swim is not productive. We have to teach young professionals that it is not a weakness to ask for help or feedback, and that in fact, it is a strength to know when you need those things to be successful. If a person fears asking for help along the way because they will be looked down upon or taken off a project, then we are failing them as mentors. Mentoring should be part of a supervisor's role and responsibilities.
