What are the most effective ways to conduct research on a tight deadline?

The strategy you choose can greatly depend on the nature of your research. If you can break your big end goal into tinier chunks, it can be much simpler to manage. Like piecing together a puzzle, it can help you visualize your progress and stay on target with your timelines. This approach makes tracking your achievements more straightforward and less overwhelming. Additionally, this method can act as a beacon, navigating you away from the distractions of non-essential data or off-topic information.

The research goal must be flexible and achievable. Sometimes, goals look attractive but cannot achieved on time. There are several issues that influence the process of achieving goals. Being achievable means that your research goals are realistic and feasible. You should consider the resources, constraints, and risks that may affect your ability to reach your goals. You should also assess the level of difficulty and challenge that your goals pose, and whether they are within your scope and capacity. In my opinion, resources are a major factor that affects or slow down the process such as funds, and human. Hence, smart strategies are required to here to achieve the goal on time.

Different methods works for different people. However, it is always helpful to create a quick skeleton draft based on key questions or ideas that needs to be delivered through the research. It could include a quick intro, key findings, key data points, and few analysis points. Those points can be later elaborated using trusted sources. It also helps to allocating specific time slots to each section. For eg., I usually assign 6-7mins for intro and at least 12-15mins for analysis in a tight deadline article. Sometimes, meeting tight deadlines can be challenging, but it is important to refrain from including unverified information.

People are different, therefore, my strategy might not work for another individual. Although, it's important to first unpack the research title. How so? identify the problem and issue. Once those are identified, you need to know your audience as to how the final solution will benefit them. Time management is also an important factor, have a notebook where you write down all the important tasks that need to be completed.

In ancient Rome, a gens (/ɡ?ns/ or /d??nz/, Latin: [g??s]; pl.: gentes [?g?nte?s]) was a family consisting of individuals who shared the same nomen gentilicium and who claimed descent from a common ancestor. A branch of gens, identified by the cognomen, was called a stirps (pl.: stirpes). The gens was an important social structure at Rome and throughout Italia during the period of the Roman Republic. Much of individuals' social standing depended on the gens to which they belonged. Certain gentes were classified as patrician, others as plebeian; some had both patrician and plebeian branches. The importance of the gens as a social structure declined considerably in imperial times.

Tight deadlines can produce a lot of stress, but there is no use performing an experiment if you are not certain what you hope to gain from it, or if you are missing controls. Three questions must be answered before starting any experiment: 1) What are we hoping to gain/learn? Ie. do we have deliverables from a company or a specific aim due for a grant? 2) What are our controls? There's no use collecting data with nothing meaningful to compare or normalize to. 3) How can this experiment be run in simplest form? We know deadlines are close, but we still need to make sure we have enough replicates of each control and condition to achieve statistical significance. Solid plans lead to solid experiments.

What works for me: 1. Plan Your Time Create a research timeline to allocate specific time blocks for each task. Consider your other commitments and be realistic about the time you can dedicate to each stage of the research process. 2. Prioritise Your Efforts Determine the most critical aspects of your research and focus on them first. Make informed decisions about what to focus on if time becomes a constraint. 3. Organise Your Findings Develop a clear system for organising and documenting the information you gather. This will make it easy to retrieve and reference later. 4. Track Your Progress Break your research timeline into milestones or checkpoints to track your progress and ensure you're on track. Make adjustments if needed.

The word gens is sometimes translated as "race", or "nation", meaning a people descended from a common ancestor (rather than sharing a common physical trait). It can also be translated as "clan", "kin", or "tribe", although the word tribus has a separate and distinct meaning in Roman culture. A gens could be as small as a single family, or could include hundreds of individuals. According to tradition, in 479 BC the gens Fabia alone were able to field a militia consisting of three hundred and six men of fighting age. The concept of the gens was not uniquely Roman, but was shared with communities throughout Italy, including those who spoke Italic languages such as Latin, Oscan, and Umbrian as well as the Etruscans.

The oldest gentes were said to have originated before the foundation of Rome (traditionally 753 BC), and claimed descent from mythological personages as far back as the time of the Trojan War (traditionally ended 1184 BC[5]). However, the establishment of the gens cannot long predate the adoption of hereditary surnames. The nomen gentilicium, or "gentile name", was its distinguishing feature, for a Roman citizen's nomen indicated his membership in a gens. The nomen could be derived from any number of things, such as the name of an ancestor, a person's occupation, physical appearance, character, or town of origin. Because some of these things were fairly common, it was possible for unrelated families to bear the same nomen.

Persons could be adopted into a gens and acquire its nomen. A libertus, or "freedman", usually assumed the nomen (and sometimes also the praenomen) of the person who had manumitted him, and a naturalized citizen usually took the name of the patron who granted his citizenship. Freedmen and newly enfranchised citizens were not technically part of the gentes whose names they shared, but within a few generations it often became impossible to distinguish their descendants from the original members. In practice this meant that a gens could acquire new members and even new branches, either by design or by accident.[1][2][7]

The way I work as a research assistant is to schedule weekly meetings with my PI and our industrial collaborators. I will present the data from that week's experiments, any trouble shooting issues and my interpretation of the results. We will review these three areas and discuss any shifted priorities among our collaborators. I will then outline my plan for the upcoming week. Whilst not all research will have industrial collaborators, this process is essential and can be accomplished with the aid of colleagues/coaches/mentors. Different branches or stirpes of a gens were usually distinguished by their cognomina, additional surnames following the nomen, which could be either personal or hereditary. Some particularly large stirpes themselves became divided into multiple branches, distinguished by additional cognomina.[1][4]

Most gentes regularly employed a limited number of personal names, or praenomina, the selection of which helped to distinguish members of one gens from another. Sometimes different branches of a gens would vary in their names of choice. The most conservative gentes would sometimes limit themselves to three or four praenomina, while others made regular use of six or seven.[1][2]

There were two main reasons for this limited selection: first, it was traditional to pass down family names from one generation to the next; such names were always preferred. Second, most patrician families limited themselves to a small number of names as a way of distinguishing themselves from the plebeians, who often employed a wider variety of names, including some that were seldom used by the patricians. However, several of the oldest and most noble patrician houses frequently used rare and unusual praenomina.[4][7]
