What do you do if your mentee is resistant to building trust and rapport?

First, don't push too hard or give up right away. Start by showing genuine interest in them and their concerns. Share your own experiences to build a common ground. Be patient and understanding, like a gardener nurturing a delicate plant. Just like roots anchoring a tree firmly in the ground.

Evaluating resistance is pivotal in effective mentorship. By discerning the underlying causes of your mentee's reluctance, you establish a foundation for productive engagement. Employ active listening and astute observation of non-verbal cues to assess their comfort level and discern potential barriers. Resistance often originates from past experiences, apprehensions about vulnerability, or inherent personality traits. Tailoring your approach to accommodate these factors is essential for nurturing trust and fostering receptivity. It's imperative to recognize that cultivating a robust mentor-mentee dynamic requires patience and empathy. Each step taken to address resistance fosters a conducive environment for growth and learning.

First of all, there are two very different situations here. If it happens during your mentoring relationship it may well be your fault as mentor. But let's focus on a situation when it happens during your first meeting. In this case it is something about mentee's personality and/or past experiences. Try to speak only when absolutely necessary between guiding questions, dancing around the key one: "What do you think may be the reason for our relationship to fail?" If you manage to help your mentee to crack open and articulate it, your job becomes quite easy - just not being that person )

Understand the reasons: Start by trying to understand why your mentee is resistant to building trust and rapport. There could be underlying factors such as past negative experiences, fear of vulnerability, or lack of confidence. Approach the situation with empathy and create a safe and non-judgmental space for open communication.

The best way to offer mentorship is to share your personal journeys and insight. That's why experienced, humble mentors with a wide variety of experiences tend to be effective. We all have patterns and they are intertwined with psychology, experiences, wrong associations or bad role models and the only way to overcome those barriers is to make a personal leap forward. Awareness is the first key to that.

This is the most important phase.. Encourage open communication, and try to understand their fears, concerns or past experiences influencing their behaviour. Be patient and realistic and work at a pace that is comfortable for your mentee. It’s ok to go slow. Be flexible in approach and adjust your mentoring style to meet their needs and expectations. It’s also important to let your mentee know that both need to work to build a trustful relationship.. if you’re still finding it difficult , seek help from other mentors for additional support

It is not easy to build rapport and trust. It takes time. Start sharing your experiences about personal or personal life. When you start sharing, mentee may start relating to some parts of your story at some point. Then mentee will also start sharing his or her viewpoints. Thus, slowly the rapport and trust will start evolving.

WIIFM, what's in it for me, is a great place to land as it reminds the mentee we are meant to serve his/her needs and bringing the discussion to reflecting how this mentorship can guide her/his journey with whatever is stuck or challenging in life's journey. Also emphasizing on ground rules in the relationship will enable trust, like confidentiality, frequency, form, time and duration of communication will help set the boundaries for both mentee and mentor to feel comfortable in building rapport.

How can I help? A great question to ask to see what they need and then what their expectations are. This can be an enabler to have the conversation about expectations, what you both can and cannot do a Mentor and Mentee. The simplicity and power of this question is great to have in your Mentor toolkit.

Discussing goals and expectations is very helpful at the beginning of the mentoring relationship. What does the mentee hope to gain from the relationship? What are her goals? If the mentoring was successful, where does the mentee hope to be at the end of the process? Clarifying expectations can help to build a shared vision for the process.

Mentee's mindset is not as strong as a mentor & seeking mentoring to address challenges & concerns which are difficult by self. At times there is hidden fear coupled with self-esteem to resist & opening up instantly. During such situations creating gradual comfort level & instead of pin pointing Mentee's drawbacks admire what's he or she is at best & then handle each situation with calm mind & give nothing but respect pace pace & pace of mentee. PS: Never forget you are mentor & not mentee.

Simple rule, if mentor can't respect pace of mentee of mentee, he/she is incomplete mentor. PS: Respecting mentee's pace builds commendable comfort level.

It is beneficial to express support for the mentee beyond the narrow scope of the mentoring relationship. I offer interest in the mentee's life and well-being. I listen to other concerns and struggles the mentee may have. I build a real personal connection with the mentee on various levels.

You can not become mentor without empathy. Extending wholehearted support builds lomg lasting comfort zone coupled with trust. PS: Mentoring is improving mentee's mindset to the core where mentee's outcomes let you feel as if self accomplishments. You are abundantly blessed being a mentor.

Lead by example: Model the behavior you expect from your mentee. Demonstrate trustworthiness, openness, and respect in your interactions with them. Share your own experiences, stories, and challenges to create a sense of vulnerability and authenticity. When your mentee sees that you are trustworthy and receptive, they may be more inclined to reciprocate and open up.

Reflecting together is like mirror effect through collective efforts between Mentor & Mentee. While evaluating the Mentee's progress do admire all accomplishments & extend insightful support to address challenges.

Make relationships and not transactions! Any business relationship is built on trust. Any that does not is bound to fail! This applies strongly to a mentee-mentor relationship. If trust is lacking or if there is a hesitation for it from the mentee, my recommendation is: ??Be patient in getting through to your mentee and gaining their trust. It is a lengthy process that cannot happen overnight. ? Open up to them and reflect fragility; chances are they start mirroring your behavior ??Give them assurances and reasons to trust you: track record, personal achievements, and the like ??Inquire about their areas of hesitation or worry ??Continuously seek feedback ??Set a timeline or an exit deadline Hope this helps!

Find the sweet spot between following the structure and customizing (personalizing) the approach as you go. As a matter of fact, build the personalization into the structure, fx by introducing the retrospectives. Based on the retro conclusions, adjust the roadmap/agenda/format.

None of us are perfect and you sharing where things went wrong for you and what you did or did not do as may be the case, helps the Mentee realise they are not alone and we are all fallible. This openness helps build a stronger relationship between Mentee and Mentor and takes it to a great level of trust. Maintain confidentiality and keep the respect alive.

- Lead by Example: Share your own experiences and vulnerabilities where appropriate. This can demonstrate trustworthiness and openness, encouraging your mentee to reciprocate over time. Encourage Incremental Steps: Instead of pushing for deep trust immediately, encourage small steps towards openness. Celebrate these small victories to build momentum in the relationship. - Adjust Your Approach: Be flexible in your mentoring style. If certain approaches or topics make your mentee uncomfortable, be willing to adjust and try different methods that might be more effective.

Create a safe environment. Ensure that your interactions with your mentee are conducted in a safe and supportive environment. Emphasize confidentiality and non-judgmental communication to encourage openness and honesty.
