I like a term taught by a mentor, "Slow down to speed up." When tasks stack up and there doesn't seem to be enough time or resources to finish a project, it is time to slow down and think through the constraints. Practice lean thinking to identify the DOWNTIME factors (Defects, Over-production, Wait time, Non-utilized talent, Transportation, Inventory buildup, Motion, Extra processing). Any one of the DOWNTIME contributors might be a cause of constraints which, when addressed and removed, will help to move the projects along more effectively.

Use practices of gemba walks or kaizen events to engage the team to think of solutions that may not be obvious. If the constraints were obvious, why haven't a solution been implemented? Challenge the team to be innovative and creative. Reward them when they are are effective with their solutions.

We don't know if we are winning unless score is tracked and made clear to the players.
