What do you do if your manufacturing operations suffer from a lack of collaboration between departments?

Clearly defining acceptable handoff points between teams/ departments is key. Removing subjectivity of what "good" is or what "done" means between teams will create more understanding and help each team identify if and why a gap may exist and how they can work together to address it (rather than just throwing something over the fence). We've had success having program managers support this effort to bridge gaps between teams. The role of the PM most closely resembles the way a customer experiences a vertically-siloed manufacturing organization. The customer experience is horizontal across all departments and the PM acts as the guide between the well structured silos.

Set common goals & plan periodical meets of cross function team. This helps to understand requirements of team. It is also observed that some of the critical task accomplished by team with better understanding.

It is extremely important to create an environment where your people know the importance of their roles and HOW it fits into the bigger picture. All people know their value and it is extremely important to know that you add to their value. When any individual goes home, they must be empowered with the comments of the value they add , or else they are just working. Not Leading your Brands

Once, my team and another seemed more like competitors than collaborators, lacking goal alignment. After realizing this, I initiated a one-on-one with the other team's lead, starting with a casual chat about personal interests to foster a friendly atmosphere. Gradually, we discussed work, exploring ways to enhance collaboration. The breakthrough came when we aligned our objectives, finding common ground, and set mutual expectations, paving the way for a "win-win" scenario. This meeting was pivotal, as we communicated the outcomes to our teams, marking the start of a solid partnership between us.

How about a rotation between departments? Another idea is to co-locate a cross-functional team for the duration of the NPI launch. Finally, consider having representatives of each function participate in the build of the product whether in-house or at a CM. Sometimes mutual respect requires some "walking in the other's shoes".

As per my experience, lack of collaboration results just because of no mutual trust in between stakeholders, misaligned goals and key measurable, lack of win win approach . Creating that environment among teams is the only solution for this where it will help stakeholders to introspect, discuss and make out their way to achieve respective goals and ultimately organisations KRA

One reason for the lack of collaboration between departments is the low level of mutual respect and trust. Silos, blame, and conflicts may result from this. You must cultivate an environment of candor, openness, and feedback if you want to promote respect and trust. Urge every department to talk to others about their ideas, problems, and accomplishments while also listening to their points of view.

Fostering trust and respect does not mean calling out an error from your co-worker. Being respectful means you go to them personally and point out what could have been done differently. Show them that it’s not about shift to shift. Make all shifts know that it’s “One team”, WE work together.

It is incredibly important in a manufacturing operations role to keep an "ear to the ground" and understand how the process is actually being done, versus what has been requested. It's fairly common in manufacturing for little "tweaks" to process to be made, and this is generally done by the individuals actually doing the manufacturing tasks to make them easier, more efficient, quicker, etc. Many times this is already happening, and rather than blindly re-training or disciplining the person in question, take a step back and see if what they are doing actually IS better than they way it was "trained". If not, react accordingly. If so, give credit where credit is due, and change the training!

Measure what matters. It's a bit of an old trope in this space but that's because it is timelessly relevant. When we ask teams to measure and monitor things that are not relevant to the entire workgroup it creates a divide and wastes energy that could be directed at improving collaboration. To get everyone on the same page the page needs to appeal to all. In production I don't care about PPV, in procurement I don't care about OT utilization. But everyone from planning to shipping cares about units produced per day (for example).
