I'd like to see it as resourcefulness instead of creativity. Being resourceful includes finding the different ways to resolve a problem and having the courage to do it. Here is what I have learnt to be resourceful. 1. Have the mindset that every problem/challenge have many solutions. (Not only a solution). 2. Reach to different people with different roles and diverse backgrounds but have a relation to the problem that you want to solve. 3. Have the courage to propose and try out the solutions you have in your mind.
Being creative is at once simple and difficult. We all want to be creative but how to be creative is the big question. An approach I usually use with leaders I coach is to trigger their creative thinking with powerful questions. Such questions are crafted to stimulate discovery and exploration of various possible solutions to challenges they face. Examples of such questions include, “What other opportunities can you tap?”, “How can you leverage all your strengths?”, and “Think like your role-model, Einstein for example, what other ideas can you come up with?”. A key to this approach is to keep questions open-ended. This allows people to examine the issue from various angles to unlock creative problem-solving fixes.
The first thing to do when we notice that our leadership decisions are dull, suboptimal, or otherwise uninspired is to check ourselves. Have we truly adopted the openness to innovation and diversity of views that we claim to support? A simple way to do this is to look around our team. Does everyone have the same background and experience? Do people contribute new ideas? If they do, are those ideas discussed in an atmosphere of curiosity and exploration under your direction? Ask a few members of your team how they would rate the organization's ability to iterate and innovate, and what they think would help to spur improvement in this area. Evaluate the extent to which they feel comfortable being candid with you. This is a powerful start.
