What do you do if your laboratory team needs guidance without being micromanaged?

Setting Expectations is the first step to ensure guidance of one's laboratory team without them being micromanaged. In doing so the Team leader/manager must ensure an inclusive team work with clear cut goals, targets, deadlines and assignment of specific tasks in the laboratory setting with an openness environment to ensure that laboratory personnel can approach their superiors when faced with difficulty in executing their assigned tasks/duties.

In a previous experience while I was in a research group at my university, the project leader would organize meetings where he would thoroughly explain the project, its objectives, and the necessary activities, along with the established deadlines. During these meetings, responsibilities were delegated, and team members were encouraged to ask questions and clarify doubts. This open and transparent communication allowed us to clearly understand our tasks and work effectively without feeling the need for constant supervision. Whenever any questions or concerns arose, the leader and the team were available to provide additional guidance.

In my experience the availability plays a crucial role here. You have to ensure that you are available for your team whenever they need guidance or help. This will eventually create a great bonding and will encourage team members to work more effectively. Moreover, more availability will also lead to better communication means less confusion which will definitely create great results at the end.

Let your team members "own" their tasks. This builds confidence and fosters a sense of accomplishment. Celebrate successes, big or small, to keep motivation high.

Empowering your team in this way promotes independence while ensuring that their actions are in the best interest of the lab.

If the laboratory requires guidance and you take ownership of it, first take a moment to assess your standing in the situation and best how to approach. Are you prone to micromanagement, or are you an absentee manager. You may want to address where on the scale your faults could fall, sometimes stepping in a direction we don't usually go, forces us to learn and keeps us from being one dimensional. Are you Autocratic, democratic, or passive in your pursuits and implementation of solutions, how is your approach received by the lab, has your guidance been effective in the past. And are there other employees input you should consider and leaders capable of acting on a vision. So, having managed yourself, now manage the situation.

Building a culture of trust is crucial. Trust that your team has the skills and dedication to perform their tasks effectively. Additionally, be accessible and open to communication; your team should feel comfortable coming to you with questions or concerns without fear of micromanagement. Lastly, encourage collaboration among team members. A collaborative environment naturally reduces the need for top-down management, as team members can rely on each other for support and guidance.
