What do you do if your HR team faces setbacks and needs to stay positive?

I engage my team in open discussion to discuss what the potential root causes of the setbacks could be, and how they think we can move beyond them. I also take time to have them brainstorm recent successes and what the things are that they think make them special. This is a great way to remind them that temporary setbacks don't negate the great things they do and the value they bring.

Foster open communication to address concerns and brainstorm solutions. Focus on solutions and opportunities for improvement. Celebrate even small achievements to boost morale. Encourage collaboration and mutual support among team members. Provide support and resources for struggling team members. Lead by example with a resilient and positive attitude. Promote work-life balance to prevent burnout. Emphasize growth and learning from setbacks. Keep the team connected through regular communication and activities. Seek feedback to continually improve morale and positivity.

Getting reasonable deadlines from their side will increase responsibilities. Appreciating the team work and recognizing them accordingly makes a positive workplace.

Focus on learning! Every setback is an opportunity to gain some insight from the experience. This can help perhaps improve processes or prevent similar issues from happening in the future. Also, honor the effort! Too often we move quickly to the next thing without acknowledging the true effort it takes to get to this point with a setback so review the hard work and efforts done already. Finally, keep the eyes forward. It can be especially hard for example when you're rolling out a career management framework that you know is going to benefit the whole of the company but there are individual resistors within who don't see the goal or benefits. This can be brutal if the resistor is an executive. Stay future-focused! :-)

In times of adversity, it's crucial to recognize the hurdles we face, yet equally important not to dwell on circumstances beyond our control. Drawing from my own journey, I've learned that leadership often shines brightest amidst challenges as we learn to cope with setback together. Set backs are a very common phenomena among HR people, given the very nature of HR work. HR practitioners are therefore not immune from these set backs. HR team leaders should always be there and be early in detecting these setbacks among their teams and provide the necessary support in time. Focusing too much on the processes can actually limit the team from embracing adaptability. - Being in HR team is where "to-do-list" rarely works as everyday comes with different issues that needs to be attended. Therefore, being agile and flexible can save you the stress when issues arises. - Also, by just looking at the occurrence of events, you can identify patterns of events and be able to plan in advance and embrace contingent measures.

I find that through adversity, real camaraderie is built. During this time, I would bring the team together. I would give everyone a chance to express what they felt went well and what went wrong. Having different perspectives will help us see the bigger picture as well as cover any blind spots. Through collaboration, we would come up with creative ways to bounce back. There would automatically be buy-in because everyone would have the opportunity to be heard. It’s in these moments, that a real team is created.

To uplift the spirits of my HR team during challenging times, I would - - Gather everyone for a team meeting to openly discuss the setbacks we are facing. - I would acknowledge the difficulties but also highlight the strengths and achievements of each team member. - Providing personalized support, such as one-on-one check-ins and opportunities for professional development, would also be a priority to ensure that each team member feels valued and supported during tough times.

One of the best things a manager ever told me while our team was being overwhelmed with a high volume of work was "our work is important, but we aren't saving lives here, take a break." Stress and burnout does not contribute to high quality work. It is often better to encourage your team to rest and come back to work with a refreshed mind than it is to push them to work harder and longer hours. A rested employee works faster and gets more done than a tired one. Burnout also can't be fixed in just a weekend or even a week. Periods of overwork can cause months of tiredness afterward.

HR teams are used to helping others, but don't forget to also help yourself. Remind everyone of often unused benefits they may have access to, like wellness rewards. Set the example that you used the benefit, and can help others do the same. Advocate for a flexible schedule. Traffic commutes, family stressor can all add to a daily stress.often a simple flex in the commute time, or day care drop off can help make the day easier overall.

An offsite that’s focused on fun can help form stronger bonds. All work and no play can affect the team’s psychological state. The team should also be given wellness days off as needed to help decompress. An unwell individual can affect the team’s wellbeing. An unwell team affects the organization’s health.

HR is not immune to setbacks but we are unique in that our setbacks affect the masses due to our role in the org causing additional pressure whether self inflicted or given. Any team dynamic should focus on being resilient and stay grounded in reality. Encourage the topics around what can we control, what did we learn, what are we doing different. Don't dwell as a leader on the setbacks and supporting your team through setbacks is even more crucial then supporting them through wins.

I had to work with a similar situation where the HR team was given setbacks and was highly demotivated. As a recently hired head of HR, I spent the first 3 months with this team, worked very closely, listened to their concerns very carefully and pulled up everyone in those 3 months. Every team member had some great experience and qualities and all I did was to create a sense of bonding and synergy and celebrated small success together as a team. Appreciated each team member on individual effort, even a small idea, small support to internal customers made a huge positive impact. Clear direction helped all of us to engage our clients and improve service delivery as a first KPI followed by strategic KPIs.
