Having a rich and diverse portfolio is HUGE. This is often worth far more than a resume to those hiring for a creative position, in my experience. Show off what you can do, in many projects. And if you don't have existing work to show off, MAKE some! Do stuff purely to put in the portfolio. Don't feel like you have to wait to get hired for a job to create things to show off.
