Those of us with a lot of imagination and creativity, sometimes forget to pull through the functional aspects of their inspiration… Get back to basics with the W’s & H: Who is this for? Consumer profile What is this inspired by? Tell your story Where can this be translated visually? Give examples of multiple media types so your client understands placement value. When can this be used? Showcase the versatility of the design in different use cases. Why will this work? Pull data on why you went with the color palette, branding elements and photos. How can I use this? Show how easy it is to use. Practicality is appealing. Understanding comms style is also important. Anticipate questions before they come up, you’ll look like a rockstar!

Design is a process that doesn't have to be a hustle, we need to work with the clients to get what they are looking for. To optimize our design process, we can start by creating a tailored creative brief ourselves with all of the information we need. Clients often face difficulty expressing their ideas, so we can assist them by asking for references to designs they like. This aids us in understanding their preferences and expectations. Providing a couple of initial design drafts that incorporate their requests can streamline the process. If they're not satisfied, we can gather feedback and come up with a polished third option. This approach ensures we deliver a design that meets their needs effectively.

Consider having a detailed discussion to understand their perspectives and expectations. Effective communication is key in ensuring everyone is on the same page.

Sketch, sketch, sketch your ideas! There's nothing more powerful than a quick sketch that can communicate all of your thoughts and ideas for the project to your client. Your sketches will convey: - What is your idea? - What do you intend to transform the idea into? - What is going to be the process that follows? And this will be supplemented with your design iterations so that your client will understand the flow of thoughts from your end. I'll call this idea of sketching as storyboarding.

If your ideas aren’t hitting the mark, don’t panic. If it were easy, they wouldn’t need you to articulate it! Ask for feedback. Accept that feedback objectively and remove the emotion from their responses. Most of the time the answer lies in the feedback. If you can’t get feedback, take a break. Walk away for a few hours to clear your mind. When you return, review the problem from the ground up and do your best to empathize with the audience. You may have simply missed a key insight or objective. Don’t think of misses as mistakes. They’re just iterations of what will ultimately be your fantastic final product!

At the very heart of design is communication.. and our job as designers is primarily to take that which is apparently abstract and incomprehensible to the client and distil it into a visual representation of the shared or desired meaning. That being said, it is very important to get feedback from our client(s). This: 1. Helps us understand our client's perspective.( Sometimes we realise that the first brief didn't fully capture the client's goals, expectations and or perspectives) 2. Asking for feedback enables you to either conform your design to the client's expectations or help the client to better understand why and how the design(s) on table would best serve to answer the design brief or solve the need/problem at hand. In my pov, Design evolves with time, just like our tools. We've moved from paint to sophisticated software like Photoshop and Figma to meet modern demands. A good designer adapts to change, understanding and fulfilling client needs. By staying flexible and open, we grow and keep pace with the times. If your design ideas aren't coming across, try adjusting your approach and communication to make them clearer to clients and team members.

Listen completely to what the customer says, make them feel heard. Then use your expertise to super simplify and make it work. Nothing needs to be complicated. If you feel they are very attached to something that will not serve the task best, show them both options. This does not need to be super time consuming, you know how to balance and work clean.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. I've sat in meetings, watching clients get lost in a sea of complexity. That's when I knew it was time to strip back the layers. I learned to ask, "What's the one thing we want the audience to remember?" That question is like a lighthouse, guiding us through the fog of complexity. It's about peeling back until the truth of the design shines through.

If youre working on a project and your ideas aren't getting across through email, or there is some digital divide you're encountering I encourage hopping on a video call and talking through the issues. Ask to record the call and afterwards taking notes of the specific issues that were discussed. Send a follow up email with your account of the feedback based on the call. Talking through issues in real time is much more efficient than email correspondence, following up with your takeaways gives the client one more chance to clarify any details that may be missed.

I believe in having shorter but more frequent face-to-face conversations with clients, as it helps address potential issues with vague feedback and prevents misunderstandings. What might seem like negative feedback in writing often turns out differently when discussed in person, promoting clearer communication and understanding.

One great way to gain approval for your ideas is by establishing trust with both your clients and team members. When you have a strong foundation of trust with your clients and team members, it becomes easier to communicate your ideas and get them approved. Trust is built over time through consistent communication, honesty, transparency, and reliability. When you establish trust, people are more likely to value your opinions and ideas, and they are more willing to take a chance on them. This can lead to stronger relationships, improved team dynamics, and overall success in achieving your goals. So, it's important to invest time and effort into building trust with those around you to get buy-in for your ideas through.

Find references, sketch rough layouts, explain the thought behind it and the purpose it will serve. Once that is done. Make sure to absorb client feedback, clear any doubts and then proceed to designing.

After trying to explain the storyboard in the best way you can, if they are still not getting the idea, get specific. Ask them what exactly is the area they didn't get. Then you are able to dissect and provide clear information on the areas of confusion. Try and keep the conversation on one page while avoiding deviation in topic.
